Maybe this is a dumb newbie question, but aren't there supposed to be random events that happen during the game (disasters, discoveries, etc.)? I love this game, except it seems to be very dry. My fav. all time was MOO2 with its personality (good planets or systems guarded by space monsters, great leaders offering to join you for a price, and random attacks by Antarans). Just my opinion, but I see everyone working to make a logical game when maybe some personality would be some fun.

They are mostly bad but they exist I asure you I had a free level three plague depoulate a Major colony not so long ago
Ah the old plague!
I experienced the same plague issue, can't remember if it was Level 3 or 4 but it creamed a major planet on my eastern front as I was focused on war efforts in the west. I am now keeping a ship equipped with a med bay available.
