Managing population? |
Can someone give me some advice on managing the population of my empire?
At the moment I just shuttle population from my homeworlds to my new planets. I prioritize larger (green) planets. But I really don't know what benefit I'm getting nor do I know when/if it's not necessary?
Do domed colonies really not benefit much?
Anyway, anything you can offer will be of help.
Thanks!!

Population management
Java,
There's not much point in manually transporting your population from your homeworld to colonies on green worlds as your population will natually migrate from your homeworld to other worlds with a breathable atmosphere on their own. Watch those green worlds closely, and you'll find that their populations grow VERY rapidly with no interferance by you. This is also why it is VERY good to have migration in the treaties you make with aliens who breath a different atmosphere type. You'll see their race will begin to populate your domed worlds... and you can remove your own people from those worlds and it will become un domed.
As for domed worlds, you must manually transport your population to those, and I tend to manually transport at least one cargo-ship worth of poeple to those planets. It definately enhances the productivity of all facilities on that planet. I don't fill the planets up though. I like to leave space for races that beath the atmosphere of the domed planet naturally to migrate to the planet. Then when I see migration happening, I remove my own population to make the planet undomed. This is another reason to limit how many of your own poeple you send to those domed planets... if you get ahold of some aliens who can breath the atmosphere of the planet either through war or treaty, you'll want to get your population off the planet and put the aliens there instead. It's easier to get a small population off than a large one. Alas, you can scrap the population instead of evacuating them... I tend not to do this... I am a kind dictator.
The goggles... they do nothing!

Space them for the greater
Space them for the greater good and your people will love you!
Getting the right people on the planet surface is vitaly important, as it allows you to maximise the use you can get out of that planet, more facilites and better bonuses.
I never bother using population transports after the early game as its just to much faff in my book.
