Degree of Universe "Habitability" |
Aaron: Remember our discussion on universe "habitability" at the Starbase Delta forum about 4 years ago? My nick in that forum was Obiwan.
In another thread here, regarding the idea of a "Map Editor", someone sited that the reason they wanted the editor was so they could overcome the problem they are having of bad starting locations with a lot of "low" habitable planets/systems nearby.
In Gal Civ's game setup, there is an option that lets you set the degree of habitability for the universe, or in other words, the ratio of habitable planets to non-habitable planets.
This is an extremely useful feature which I remember discussing with Aaron in a long thread, a few years back in the SSNG forum called Starbase Delta.
The SE V Setup's "Habitability" feature, along with the "Map Editor" are needed badly. I'm afraid I'm having anxiety attacks over this..... ggggzzz...hhhgggzzz..., etc.

Shazbot! Subject Fields......
I would certainly like the ability to choose the habitability of the 'galaxy' at map generation.

Shazbot!
it wont work unless you want
it wont work unless you want to get more planets or more of one type. in my mod i lower the expantion of rases my swaping the atmospheres with the planet types.
Habitability does not exist
Habitability does not exist as a concept in SEV. In GalCiv, planets are "habitable" or not because all races follow the same rules for habitation. In SEV, any planet is habitable, but some are more habitable for some than others. If you're unlucky and pick, say, Hydrogen Gas Giants, and end up in a system filled with nothing but rocky methanes, you're SOL...had you chosen methane instead, planets would be everywhere.
Change Habitability
You can change the Quadrent.txt file to change the types of planets that are generated when the galaxy is created. I changed it to favor Rock Oxygen planets and Oxygen planets in general and it works wonderfully.
Not Really Better Habitability
That doesn't really create better habitability as an overall rule, it just creates better habitability for Rock/Oxygen dwellers and Oxygen breathers in general, while worsening it for everyone else.

I think startin with more
I think startin with more than one planet can over come some of these problems. Even though I think it is cheating (in a way) to start out with more than one planet.
