Only one column. Larger space to read posts. What a concept.

GameDev.net does one column very well. So does Saitek.

Java forums does two columns, and it's very legible. Adobe Acrobat does a terrible job.

Comcast broadband does a good job with three columns in threads view, and two in posts view.

And here's another vote for two columns, because three is too much in posts view.

Users can toggle the display of blocks in either left or right columns, with exclusion of the Navigation menu. These options are available under "My account", accessible from the left menu.

If it weren't that a horizontal navigation menu was never designed or available, both left and right columns could be removed altogether. An abbreviated horizontal menu could be designed and implemented without too much difficulty I would imagine.
