Torpedoes

Soumis par Vermithrax le Mer, 2006-12-06 20:54 Space Empires V General

So, torps are seekers eh?

Well, if PD is having such a problem maybe torpedoes are worth a look. Do they all (all seekers that is) always hit? Then, if the potential damage per kt and per second is equal to beam weapons (or even a little worse) then the only major drawback is ordanance. I've always wanted to use torps, but they were quite ineffective in SE4. Anyone use 'em?

I use them all the time; they are quite good as they are faster than normal missiles (so pd is less effective against them), but have a shorter range. they also deliver more damage than capital ship missiles.

Do torps hit 100% of the

Soumis par Vermithrax le Ven, 2006-12-08 19:48

Do torps hit 100% of the time? I don't know how to verify this by looking in components.txt. Also, I've seen references a couple of times now to torps (and the graviton hellbore) being 'faster' than CSMs. I can't get that out of components.txt either. Speed for all seekers I've looked at is listed as .04, whatever that means. And, some seekers have a 'turn rate' of .01 while others do not. I'm still deciphering what the text in the txt file is telling me and I'm a bit confused.

The reason for the hoopla is I would like to use torps (and other seekers) if they are reasonably effective compared with beams. In SE4 that was not the case. If we standardize at 2 seconds reload and 30 kt of space then the CSM delivers 13 hits, the plasma missle 16, the AM torp 13, the quantum torp 15, and the gamma pulse torp 21 (quite good). All these numbers are range 1 level 1 just to get started (I realize some weapons attenuate with range and others don't).

For comparison, APBs put out 21.5 and MBs 22.5 (adjusted by 1.5x for the MB's smaller kt).

Now all seekers use ordanance and energy beams do not. but, given the range of some seekers and the fact that they always hit barring getting shot down I think I could make a case for using seekers (CMS long range, gamma pulse torp medium range, and quantum torp short range), at least as a mix with beams.

Another thing in favor of torps is the three mentioned can call be researched at once.

The other big question is can torps use mounts. If not, once mounts are common, seekers loose ground. I know in SE4 CSM didn't use mounts, but graviton hellbore and nullspace projector did. I haven't looked at these last two in detail yet, but if they are seekers and therefor cannot use mounts they loose their effectiveness even more than some have mentioned.

So, if anyone could help with this last and understanding some of the seeker characteristics in components.txt I would appreciate it.

seekers

I use seekers almost exclusively anymore unless I'm using fighters or drones which I use beam weapons on mostly. That WILL change when (I hope) the AI starts to actually use PD lol... seekers ALWAYS hit unless A> they are shot down (main weapons have a hard time at this but some can shoot seekers) or B> they run out of gas (enemy is running for whatever reason is about the only time this happens)

The range on seekers makes them insanely powerful because you can set maximum weapon range strategy and then watch the poor AI get battered into dust without being able to retaliate Sticking out tongue (note you WILL get shot a bit while your seeker armed ships turn around to re-gain range so build a bit of defense in there for that purpose.)

If you use this stratergy you have to can't really use fleets as all movement and ranges are considered from the centeral ship, so one wing can be shoved into the thic of the action without the captains even blinking.
