Is this normal: AI kills my colony ships while we are at friendly terms in diplomacy

Soumis par Black root le Dim, 2006-11-26 09:01 Space Empires V General

Very early in a game, I encountered an AI and we made a trade agreement and a few other agreements (can't recall what), but no alliance. He then decided to enter my systems and hide in the warp points and killed every ship moving though them. Once I sent in my fleet to protect my colony ships, he declared war on me because I attacked him, but it appears to be ok for him to enter my systems and take out my defenceless ships.

Non-Agression Provision?

Soumis par Captain Kwok le Dim, 2006-11-26 09:17

Do you have any non-aggression provisions with them?

hmm, I don't think so, even

hmm, I don't think so, even though I'm not sure. I don't have a savegame from before they declared war on me. Is it normal to get random attacks from guys you didn't sign a non-agression pact with? I mean I take that as a hostile action, which belongs to war and I consider no treaty/trade treaties as more like neutral relation. They also admired me, so I got a bit surprised when they killed 4 colony ships in two turns.

Read the Fine Print

Soumis par Omnius le Dim, 2006-11-26 10:13

Black root,
Be very careful to read "the fine print" of those deals the AI's offer you. I found that you have to be very careful to scroll down to see all aspects of an AI offer. Many times they offer "poison pills" in their offers that are one-sided deals that prevent you from doing things while allowing them to do them.

I second the above

Whatever the faults the AI may have it is a past master at coming up with treaties which can royally screw you if you don’t pay attention. Ok so you can break them but this causes its own problems.

There are also several variants on the non aggression treaty which include things called non aggression treaties but which have no such clauses in them I have had a "friendly" AI mine all the warp points it could reach in my empire and not give me the codes to pass them safely before now

ok, so it's normal that AIs

Soumis par Black root le Dim, 2006-11-26 13:23

ok, so it's normal that AIs screw you if they can. It's nice to know. The AI acted mighty stupid because it only took like 20 turns to conquer their homeworld, so attacking me turned out to be fatal.

Strangers in the night

As others have said, the fine print is very important. If you don't have the right agreement and your ships wander into each other, there will be assplosions
