Finite resources or not

Soumis par Numdydar le Sam, 2006-11-25 22:13 Space Empires V General

I have always played SEIV and SEV with Finite Resouces checked in game setup. I find it gives a lot more tension to the game as you have to be careful about what you build because if you run out of resources you can't build anything and your ships start to be lost due to lack of maintenance.

So I thought I would ask the forum their thoughts on this matter. Also wanted to ask does the initial percentage that is listed on a planet ever decrease, i.e. to 0%? If a planet has a mineral content of %110 does that mean a mineral miner will collect 10% more than normal for the entire game?

Any feedback would be great as I would like to understand the attraction to the percentage method of play.

Thanks,
Numdydar

Non-Finite vs Finite

Soumis par Captain Kwok le Sam, 2006-11-25 22:30

The main attraction is that a) No need to micromanage resources as the planets won't lose value so it's ok to waste them or overproduce and b) the AI doesn't do finite resources well at all.

A planet with 110% value will give you 10% more output than what the description says... ie a Mineral Miner that pulls 2,000 by default will do 2,200 etc.

I would like to know

Soumis par Helker le Sam, 2006-11-25 22:37

I would like to know if the surplus resources produced are lost, or the resources produced are gathered according to the expenses...

For example... Let's say I'm producing 100,000 Minerals, using 25,000 for maintenance and production, and I can store 50,000. Are the 25,000 minerals in excess just dumped into space, or are acutually harvested only 75,000 (50k to put in the storage plus the 25k for expenses) instead of the 100k?

Lost into the void...

Soumis par Captain Kwok le Sam, 2006-11-25 22:38

They're lost into the void if you don't have any storage space. Sticking out tongue

There's also no way to change the production level...

Don't know why that bothers you. All you need to do is research "Storage" for each of the three materials. It's pretty cheap and doesn't take long. Then you build storage units for each of the three and before long you've got PLENTY stored away. Smiling

Dont use Limited resorces

Soumis par evilginger le Dim, 2006-11-26 02:34

Don’t use limited resource my self as I found the game was more fun with out it is SEIV and have continued to follow that in SEV. It takes a long time to deplete a planet of all usable resources and I feel it happens to quickly in space empires

problem with finite

Soumis par amerelium le Dim, 2006-11-26 07:18

problem with finite resources is that the AI never research the techs to increase (or maintain) mineral output fast enough - he runs himself dry. Kinda like us in RL..Eye-wink

Production Management

Soumis par Omnius le Dim, 2006-11-26 10:37

Personally I like the way production/storage is handled. It makes players be smart to balance production with expenditures and forces them to build resource storage to keep the excess. In the beginning there's usually an overproduction of minerals problem but that can change quickly if you're not careful and then you'll regreat it if you didn't squirrel away some of that early excess.

finite resources

Soumis par thedude le Mar, 2006-11-28 17:01

I think this would be a cool way to play, but you'd have to start with a heavily modded version of the game:

1) you'd have to start off with lot of empty storage available on your homeworld(s)
2) reduce the amount of maintenance required by ships, etc....perhaps even reduce their original cost as well
3) you could reduce the cost of mining facilities, and reduce their output. that way you could better control how much you harvest each turn and can scrap miner facilities and rebuild quickly when needed
4) you could beef up solar collectors to return more resources per turn

just my thoughts...I have only ever played one finite resources game and I did poorly due to my inexperience with it. seems to me that the stock game does not support this play option well, but a good mod would make it much more fun.

Finite fun for PBW

Soumis par Captain Kwok le Mar, 2006-11-28 20:14

I've played a few PBW games with SE:IV that used finite resources - quite challenging once you started reaching zero on your core worlds. Sticking out tongue
