Problems Upgrading Engines |

I am not sure what has happened here but I have sudenly had some upgraded ships lose half their speed. This has happened in 2 seperate games (both using 1.17 games)
1. I have upgraded a ship to a new version using Quantum Engines 5 rather than QE1, I have also added to this ship a solar sail (only signifcant change other than updating older techs) I have the racial speed bonus as well, and my Crusier design has gone from having speed 16 to having speed 8.
However for some bizarre reason this isn't even consistant, as a couple of ships still has speed 16 when upgraded.
2. New game / empire (still having the racial speed bonus) I have had the same problems going from Jacketed Proton Engines (lvl 5) to Quantum Engines (lvl2). This time I wasn't using solar sails and still had speed 8.
In both cases new built ships are OK, its just ships that get upgraded.

when this happens, try using
when this happens, try using the ~recalc "cheat"
I'll be interested to see if that fixes the problem... (suposedly it does the same as reloading)

Upgrading engine problem:
Cordas. Check the number of crew after the refit. It will most likely be zero for the ships that have reduced movement. They were most likely refitted at a planet that was composed of a different population than that of the crew (your native population). I don't know if this is by design or a bug.

Recalc cheat
Type ~recalc~ - it recalculates all the requirements/formulae etc. for items in the game.

try the ` buttin
try the ` buttin then

I've seen this also
Had some upgraded ships with movement of 7 when should have been 15. It was an older fleet that was in R&R anyway so I just scrapped the ships and replaced them with new ones. Don't have the save game anymore to send in or I would.

Are you playing sequential
Are you playing sequential or similtanious turn based games?
Are you the FIRST empire in the list, or are you second, third, or something else?

Something similar happened
Something similar happened to me in my last game. I sent one ship back to a space yard, refitted it to another design, then refitted it back to the original design. After it finished repairing, it had full speed again.
The other two ships were so far from a space yard, I just destroyed them and moved on.

Half Speed Retrofits
Half speed retrofit ships is a "known issue". Ships loose all their crew when they're retrofit, and if they aren't over a "native" planet, they don't get 'em back.

Yep, that's it. My work
Yep, that's it. My work around has been to build a ship with space yard component then have that ship travel with the fleet. I can retrofit on the fly and not have to worry about finding a planet in reasonable distance with both a space yard AND native race population. Takes longer but, hey, everything in life is a tradeoff.

I've also experienced this
I've also experienced this bug. Strangely enough, one or more turns later, my retrofitted ships finally had the movement points they were supposed to have. Not yet at quantum engines, so I doubt it's got anything to do with that I also think it may even vary between various individual ships, so some get the bug and others don't, while all upgrading to the same new ship type ...

Repair also has the same problem
I have found the same problem but with repair, as I was avoiding retrofit because of this problem.
I was reparing some ships that had just been in combat and once they were all ready to go I moved them only to find that one of the ships had had its movement reduced to 5. I checked to make sure it was 100% repaired...it was and I then noticed that its crew was 0 of 200...Doh
The ships were using the first type of engine in the game...don't remember its name. I'll try the recal fix when I get home...God! work just so gets in the way of things!
Only the Awkward question; only the Foolish ask twice

Cheers for that. However recalc doesn't fix the engine / speed problem.
Have found a fix for this of
Have found a fix for this of sorts..... When you see a ship that has speed 8 when it should be faster save and exit the game, then reload.
This sometimes works and sometimes doesn't *GRRR*
