Disabled ships

Image de Setekh
Soumis par Setekh le Ven, 2006-11-17 01:11 Space Empires V General

Haven't had this happen before, but one of my destroyers got 100% damage to all engines and is currently stranded. Is there a way to recover/tow it?
I don't see a general order for it, do I have to design some kind of recovery ship?

Thanks.

Build a repair ship

Soumis par evilginger le Ven, 2006-11-17 03:14

The only way I can think of is to build a repair ship of some sort.

Search Repair technology

Sure you can put some research points in the Repair technology. It will allow you to build some repair bays on your ships. Then you’ll just have to build repair ships in order they salvage your stranded destroyer.

pretty much

Soumis par putty le Ven, 2006-11-17 04:17

the best option is to research repair, that will give you the repair module component (150kt) which you can put on a ship then take that ship out to the stranded one and wait a turn. somewhere you can actually allocate what gets repaird first (choose engines) once the ship is repaird enough to move you can move it to a planet with a spaceyard where it will be repaird much faster. or you can just let you new repair ship fully repair it. other options are to research ship spaceyards (this takes much more research points but gives you a spaceyard ship component which can repair and build more ships) the final (and probably quickest) option is to have another one of your ships whith some weapon move to the same square. you can then choose the "fire on" option. (in the lower right corner choose the green recycle symbol then the fire on option will show up) that will (obviously) destroy the ship. so you wont have to pay an upkeep or research otherwise (IMO) superfluous techs and ships.
one last thing. honestly ive tried a few times to use the fire on option and couldnt get it to work this game is riddled with bugs. so although it shouldnt be a factor...best of luck.

justa tip

Soumis par putty le Ven, 2006-11-17 05:38

to avoid this (very ugly) situation i place 1-2 engines in the innner hull that way even if the ship sustains massive damage it still has some movement.

Lol, engines on the inside of the ship, that bothered me to the point of changing where you can't place engines... I think Kwok's Balance Mod also changed this, uh, oversight. Sticking out tongue

Ships with no engines/supply

Soumis par carlosjuero le Ven, 2006-11-17 06:03

Ships with no engines/supply still get 1 movement point don't they? (I know in SE:IV it worked this way, and I believe I noticed it in SE:V stock after a battle)

No Supply/Engines

Soumis par Varek Raith le Ven, 2006-11-17 06:09

That is the case with no supply, I'm not sure if this is so when all engines are destroyed.

Ah, ok - so my damaged ships

Soumis par carlosjuero le Ven, 2006-11-17 06:36

Ah, ok - so my damaged ships must have had an engine hidden on a lower deck (the worst one was at 95% damage). It is definitely more 'realistic' to have the ship 'dead in space' without engines (destroyed crew quarters/bridge/life support could result in an 'auto pilot' taking over or something to explain 1 movement left).

I always reasearch level 1 in repair pretty quick so I can send a repair frigate out with my fleets - just in case Smiling

Yes, because crippled ships

Yes, because crippled ships left in enemy systems usually won’t last for long…

Thanks for the replies.
as the above poster just said, the ship I had was in an enemy system and was taken out 2 turns later.
I've since built a repair ship to recover ships like this in the future.

Fleet management

Soumis par col.kurtz le Ven, 2006-11-17 09:02

Yes, just as in real life a fleet needs a lot of different ships, including support vessels (you can also build “tankers” to replenish your ships) to operate.

Actually what I like much with SE-V is this highly detailed level of ship-management. You can design your ships, tailor them to your needs and test them in the space simulator. You can also retrofit them, mothball them etc. You can organize them into Fleets and Task Forces with specific formations. Its’ really a lot of fun and makes SE-V a lot better than Galactic Civilizations.

Inner Engines

Soumis par Rilbur le Ven, 2006-11-17 10:21

Hey, while most of the engines make no sense placed in an inner slot, the quantum engine, at the very least, sounds like it might be reactionless. In which case it doesn't need to be placed inside.

repair

Soumis par DimmurWyrd le Sam, 2006-11-18 19:19

I'm odd... against the AI I'll just build "troll" ships... every ship over around 500kt has a repair bay on it lol... any ships that survive even with 1 structure left are generally at 100% next turn Sticking out tongue

I'm kinda lazy against the AI... I just build "all-in-one" ships... they all have some PD, repair, supply gen, etc... and the larger the fleet the larger the overkill factor on such things hehe. (I also love the various sci-fi novels/series with lots of detailed space combat which heavily influences my design strategy.) my baseships are heavily based off "berserkers" that are 100% autonomous world destroyers capable of self-repair and even building new fighters/drones etc.
