How do you construct a Ring World?

Image de Antarian
Soumis par Antarian le Mer, 2006-11-15 13:29 Space Empires IV General

I have ring world tech but can't figure out how to use it. The ship components are so huge I can't build a ship with them on it, so WHY are they ship components? Is there a special ship type called 'Ring World'??

Ringworlds

Soumis par Rilbur le Mer, 2006-11-15 23:08

Depends on the mod you play, but the general idea is this:

You have a ring world "generator", (which must be placed on a ship due to a code restriction that requires movement points to do solar manipulation) and that generator can create a ringworld around a star if the required tonnage of the other components are available. They do *not* all need to be on one ship, simply in the same sector. You then use the ship to create the ringworld sized planet around the star.

okaaaaaay....

I figured that part out. Problem is, the components are so HUGE, even a baseship cannot hold them! what ship do you use to put a ring world component on?

Do more research

Soumis par Rilbur le Jeu, 2006-11-16 14:10

Do some more research on baseships, they get larger with more tech...

You are running stock, right?

edit:

From an eyeball on the techlevels, you could expect to need AT LEAST tech level 5 baseships, probably higher once you include engines and the like. Make sure to use a mastercomputer, if you have it.

Or just use Bases; Have a

Soumis par carlosjuero le Jeu, 2006-11-16 14:43

Or just use Bases; Have a construction ship build bases whose only components are a master computer and the materials for the ring world right at the star location you will be using. Seeing as how the only vehicle that needs movement is the one with the placement generator

Placement Generator

Soumis par Rilbur le Jeu, 2006-11-16 14:47

The problem is getting the placement generator ON the ship.

Aahh.. I haven't gotten that

Soumis par carlosjuero le Jeu, 2006-11-16 14:50

Aahh.. I haven't gotten that far up in Stellar Manipulation with SE:V yet. I know that in SE:IV a standard base ship would work but then SE:IV didn't have the various levels of each ship type.

I guess researching up the base ship is the only option - how big is the placement generator?

Big

Soumis par Rilbur le Jeu, 2006-11-16 15:07

Around 2K, IIRC. And teh default basesihp is 1550, IIRC.

Uh...

Soumis par Thy Reaper le Jeu, 2006-11-16 22:55

If the question is actually about SE:IV and building Ringworlds in Stock, no movement is required to create artificial worlds, and the only thing in stock capable of holding the component to build said worlds are Starbases. Just build one in the sector and order the stellar manipulation.

Rilbur, it seems as though you were giving him advice about SE:V mechanics...

Ahhhh... I totally missed

Soumis par carlosjuero le Ven, 2006-11-17 11:01

Ahhhh... I totally missed the forum name as well - I use the recent posts view too Smiling.

So in SE:IV a baseship + starbases w/ a Master computer and full of the materials built on spot will work fine.

Excuse my language, but...

Soumis par Antarian le Ven, 2006-11-17 18:16

HOLY FREAKIN' CRAP! Your telling me I have to build a farm of STARBASES to construct a RingWorld? And I have to do this with a CONSTRUCTION SHIP????? (which normally takes about 4 times as long as a planet construction yard).

What is the point??? It's going to take me the rest of my game to build a single ringworld!

Fleet of contruction ships

Soumis par Thy Reaper le Ven, 2006-11-17 18:23

No one said building a planet from scratch was quick and easy. Remember, a ringworld is the equivalent of 5 large planets, and a sphere world is equivalent to 10 large planets. That quite a bit of space. They also provide so much cargo space that the sheer number of WPs you can place on it make it nearly impossible to capture.

The fastest way to build one in stock is to have a fleet of construction ships, one building the generator, and the rest building all the required materials. 3 of either grav plating / HD cables can be built in the time of the generator, and for the ringworlds you need 5 of each. Take a fleet of 10 contstructor ships, one builds the generator, one builds 3 grav plating, one builds 2 grav plating and 1 HD cable, and two build 2 HD cables each. In 2.7 years IIRC, you'll have everything you need to build a ringworld.

The same setup applies to Sphere Worlds, but you need more ships dedicated to building materials to do things within the same time frame.

In SE:IV you only need starbases, the construciton doesn't require a movement point.

Nope,

Soumis par Antarian le Lun, 2006-11-20 17:33

Not worth it. With the same amount of resources I could construct several 'uber' fleets capable of steamrolling the galaxy under my iron heel. Not only that, I am in the fight of my life right now against a super tech race, and I need every point of resources on the front line translated into fighting ships. By the time I have the spare points to play around with building a ringworld, I will own the entire galaxy.

And if you look at the cost of building a ship that can create 1 large planet, basically a cruiser with a hi-tech matter condenser sphere, even throwing in a repair component so it can generate a new large planet every second turn, the cost is WAY lower. So to pay for the luxury of creating 5 large planets from scratch, with no asteroids to condense, you have to pay THIS? It's crazy. You'll never have the spare construction queues and required resources to pull it off, and if you did, you should have already won the game.

And CAN a construction ship construct a component by itself? No, I'd have to build shell starbases, which is kind of silly in it's own right. There should be a'ringworld section' shiptype that holds 10,000 or something like that.

You can mod them in as well

I once moded my game files to include rings and spheres as naturally occuring planets. The friggin things were everywhere. And not around stars either.
