Greyed out Techs?

Soumis par PsiSoldier le Mar, 2006-11-14 18:46 Space Empires V FAQs

Ok I have only been playing this for about a day or two now and I am running into problems where I research something like Huge Hull's and it goes grey and does not let me research anymore after like Tech lvl 11 or so, but yet I read on the net that there are over 6000+ lvls of Technologies to research.. Am I missing something why are my technologies maxing out early like this with the tech lvl I have currently there is not nearly enough tonage to fill up anything close to most of the slots on my Dreadnought which is kinda screwy.

Im sure hoping that I havent actually hit the maximum tech lvl for this stuff.

Thanks

Some tech areas have caps

Soumis par Captain Kwok le Mar, 2006-11-14 18:53

Level 10 is the maximum for Huge Hull construction... there's still another of ships available - Base Ships - but you'll need to do some research in large base construction to open up that technology.

Bleh

Soumis par PsiSoldier le Mar, 2006-11-14 19:05

That kinda bites, I had read something somewhere about this game having near limitless Tech levels to research and level 10 is hardly limitless =/

Eh well im about to try your mod anyways which changes the tech levels and stuff anyways I think.

Well when you combine all of

Soumis par carlosjuero le Mar, 2006-11-14 19:10

Well when you combine all of the different levels of each discipline, plus the levels unlocked by reaching a certain level of tech (stellar manipulation, etc) and the unique racial trait techs - you have quite literally thousands of tech levels to research. I don't think the claim has been made that each tech has thousands of levels.. that would get kinda crazy (and a bit boring, I mean hitting tech level 900 in ship construction after a couple hundred hours of playtime?)

Well

Soumis par PsiSoldier le Mar, 2006-11-14 19:16

Yeah but everything would have its trade offs "Strong in one area weak in another or a lot of others because of it" But it would make sense to have enough tech levels to allow you the tonage required to fill up all those slots on your fancy Dreadnought
I dont think that would have been too much to ask at least...

ship hulls

Soumis par evilginger le Mar, 2006-11-14 19:17

These do max out but if I work it out right you will have researched 50+ tech levels of various ship hulls to get to huge hulls as you have to have Tl 5 in a ship hull type to research the next one. So that’s not a short research tree also to get the most out of the hull you are going to have to have spent millions of research points on the technologies that go in it. If you want proof have a look at the forum and listen to the tales about killing AI dreadnoughts with frigates or destroyers with the proper tech advantages.

Trust me after 100 years I have some good stuff but there is still plenty to research for example I hardly use mines and have TL3 in them but do use gun and recon Sats as a defence for colonies so have TL10 Sats with Tl18 sensors & guns in them and it now occurs to me that I need to upgrade them as my weapon and sensor tech is better than that now the design being three game years old. My biggest ships are Battle cruisers at TL7 as I am not a huge ship fan and my heavy cruisers are quite capable of standing up against my main opponents Dreadnoughts and Battle cruisers

I see your point there,

Soumis par carlosjuero le Mar, 2006-11-14 19:19

I see your point there, maybe modding the data files to increase the dreadnought tonnage earlier?

Short research tree for me

Soumis par PsiSoldier le Mar, 2006-11-14 19:26

With the amount of Tech Research my empire is Generating I can easily increase each level of a hull Tech Every turn and have research to spare in other areas left over. So something being a Long or a short research tree is all relative. Eye-wink

Well actually when I turn my attention to researching Hull's I actually research about 3 or 4 Tech levels in One single turn...

If you want to you can MOD

Soumis par evilginger le Mar, 2006-11-14 19:34

The game is quite easy to Mod I haven’t tried it yet as I am enjoying the stock game but I am tempted to borrow the AI changes from the Balance Mod to make the game more of a challenge. I would not recommend that Mod to PsiSoldier as other parts of it shorten the tech tree some what

Yeah I just looked at the

Soumis par PsiSoldier le Mar, 2006-11-14 19:51

Yeah I just looked at the the Data files for the Tech Tree and it looks easy as hell to create mods for it. Ive done a lot of scripting for the Elderscrolls games and this looks so easy it puts that to shame at least for what I want to do right now. Im going to use the Balance mod because of the AI changes and if I decide to increase any levels for Technologies it seems like it would be easy as changing a few numbers.

If I were playing on a smaller galaxy map I would definitly want fewer tech levels I think, but not on the largest size map where you get such an huge amount of Research per turn going after a while. I think the Balance mod made it so it takes more research to hit the next level of tech too which is good.

I only worry if I start increasing the Max tech levels for something that the AI wont know to research further up the tree if it comes to that.

Don't forget

Balance mod reduces the overall number of techs, but increases teh costs.

There are 10 types of people in the world:

Those that understand binary, and those that don't.

I prefer a small number of deeper tech trees. In my mod, I'm cutting out several tech trees, such as merging all of the weapon mount techs, merging all of the space hull techs, and adding some benefits to other techs.
