OK... Now It's Completely Unplayable!!! |
I've had a game going for about three days now and it's suddenly become unplayable. I've saved after every turn but loading from either one of the last or the save just prior, results in the same thing - hung at the "Processing" stage.
It's pretty obvious even to a non-programmer that the problem is due to the fact that it's stuck in an endless loop - just executing the same commands over and over. I say it's obvious because the CPU is maxed out at 100% and stays there forever.
Forget all the other bugs for now - THIS is the one that needs to be fixed first!!!!!

This may be a stupid question
This used to happen to me with 1.08, but not with 1.13. Did you update?
1.08 used to hang at End of Turn processing
1.13 hangs (for me) after EoTP
Are you using any mods or is this stock?

Sometimes 1.13 STILL hangs
Sometimes 1.13 STILL hangs at End of Turn processing

I had a good game going but
I had a good game going but then it got corrupted and will not save properly. This occurred right after I tried ground combat for the first time (and my troops would not move).
Cunnilingus and Psychiatry have brought us to this...
Tony Soprano [/i]The Sopranos

bump the combat map radius
bump the combat map radius up a bit.
this sometimes fixes the problem.

Change the hanging computer to Player control
I've also heard that, as a work-around, one can load the game, switch the offending computer player over to human control (the offending player is usually the one it hangs on, but this can take some trial and error) and then "fix" whatever is wrong with their behavior that is making the processing hang. This can be voting on an alliance, the endless "chase" combat, or other strange occurances. I haven't yet had this bug (haven't played very much as I am waiting for the 1.14 patch) so I don't know if it works well to do this.
Also, I run the Balance mod and I went to the settings.txt and changed my Combat Map Radius from 1500 (default to Balance mod) to 2000 (Captain Kwok's newly stated preference). Some of these might help.
Baelthazar
It has happened to me as well,
I have had 4 games screwed now, b/c of the same problem, the computer was getting hung up on "processing all players turns", this needs to be fixed soon. Also, why is it you can never catch another ship in combat, many times I have had a ship lets say a frigate, chasing a colony ship, my frigate has better engines, and more of them, but i can never close the gap? Also the end of turn waiting is way to long, my system is way more than enough to handle this game but I find myself waiting for minutes, other than that the game is great!!!
Lets hope 1.14 solves this!!
Lets hope 1.14 solves this!!
?Dumb Question?
I know this may sound like a stupid question, but how long are you giving it to process the turns?
I know, I'm going back to
I know, I'm going back to other games and patched Space Empires IV for awhile before trying to play this again.
similiar experiences
I have had three diffrent turn-processing hang experiences:
1. during the "player 4 turn" or whatever message it is phase.
2. during the "processing" phase.
and finally the current one bugging me is a blank black screen AFTER the processing phase that just doesn't go away.
my combat radius is 1500, gonna try 2000 and see if that helps.
Try this
I used to have that endless loop after each turn until i disabeled the FPS(Frames Per Second) display. I am not sure if you have the same problem but mine went away after i removed the FPS.

I had the bug anyway
Personally I never used the FPS, but I had the bug anyway.
Actually...
Actually, I think increasing combat radius CAUSES the problem. I had my game hung on me on player 3, so I saved, and reloaded and tried a ton of stuff but it still hung no matter what. Then I went and changed the combat radius back to the orginal value of 1000.0 and it stopped hanging... I don't know about the hanging at the end of turn processing, because I still haven't gotten one of those with v1.13 (plenty in v1.08), but if you are at one of the AI's turn, give it a try? I haven't had a problem since... well, except for a ton of lost sleep tonight.

BSOD Workaround
my combat radius is 1500, gonna try 2000 and see if that helps.
I found a workaround for this one. Make sure you have auto save set for every turn. When you get the Black Screen of Death, use Windows Task Manager to close the game. Next, open the game back up and load the latest save file. You will find that it is the turn that hung up and it will finish playing. Its a pain in the a%% but it works. By the way I e-mailed this one in as a bug.
Kwok suggested reducing the
Kwok suggested reducing the combat time by half 'in conjunction' to the increased radius. This gives attackers more chance to chase down fleeing ships while at the same time reducing the overall combat time.
I've tried it and it helps a little.
The other solution (i've not tested) is human vs all the AI teamed up (that should stop all in-fighting between AI players)
Your lord and master (below Foamy) LordHavoc
I am playing version 1.08
I am playing version 1.08 with Balance Mod 94. All works very well, except the boarding ships. The AI is excellent and the empires make war, dialog, make alliances and do trade with me (the only problem, very minor, is the log that is inversed).
I think that, to will too many implementation to the game, we are destroyin it.

I agree
I agree. It’s sad but the 1.08 is better than the 1.13 one’s which created new (space combat related) bugs.
There is no need
There is no need to use the Task Manager... Just press ALT+F4 to close the application

This also happends to my game
Usually my games hangs after processing all players and then NOTHING happends anymore.
Can their be done something with thus bug ........

BSOD
Haven’t had one with the full game but did with the Demo occasionally (V1.08) where I find the thing hung on end of player turn processing. It didn’t crash just got stuck doing something. even when I went and left it processing for the duration of two back to back episodes of andromeda which must have been the better part of two hours normal process time was seconds per that phase and may be a half minute for the whole thing at most.
The thing I did notice was that once you had a game go like that it would do it again on roughly the same turn even if you went back to an earlier save. I sort of assumed that the issue was due to some sort of corruption of the running game. Us old uns ought to remember that as when I started playing computer games it used to happen a lot more.
my advice would be to start a fresh game if it happens and trust it will be found and dealt with
