The **MOST** Valuable Feature That Could Be Added To The Game! |
Code it so that it would run in the background! That way, during some of the extremely loooong periods of the game - like colonizing, processing, etc. the player coud be doing other things (like being on these forums, email, or just plain websurfing, etc.) while the game continues to run.
It would make the game AND life much better for all.

Bug
Now having that in full screen HAS to be a bug, IMO. That said, it might be a *windows* level bug, I'm not sure I can think of any program that processes while in the background, if its set to full screen (I'd love to test that with an application, but all I have that runs in full-screen mode are games).
There are 10 types of people in the world:
Those that understand binary, and those that don't.
Re: The **MOST** Valuable Feature That Could Be Added To The Gam
Agreed, anything can be programmed to run in the background.
I've even tried to create multiple desktops on multiple monitors to work around this severe issue. However, SE5 either crashes or stops processing.

Re: The **MOST** Valuable Feature That Could Be Added To The Gam
I just use two computers...
SEV, more than a feeling.

Re: The **MOST** Valuable Feature That Could Be Added To The Gam
Just wait 1 more week. Then the public patch will be released which will allow the game to run in the background.

Playing Touhou games (Go here if interested . No, nobody else is that good/insane as that replay). No rush for SE V bug fixing.
Re: The **MOST** Valuable Feature That Could Be Added To The Gam
I asume the game will still stop for player imput and this will limit how much can be done in the backgroung but it will I hope allow people drop in amd out and not have it stall the action
Re: The **MOST** Valuable Feature That Could Be Added To The Gam
I'd like a "research queue" - a way to set some research goals that would occur in sequence instead of having to manually set your research spending every turn. That's one part of the drudgery that could be eliminated easily enough....

Re: The **MOST** Valuable Feature That Could Be Added To The Gam
that would require it to run in realtime. or have it reduced to a little news like ticker on the bottem of your screen where after a few seconds of ignoring the turn update it will automatically advance to the next turn.
Re: The **MOST** Valuable Feature That Could Be Added To The Gam
Using dual core with 2gb of ram on Windows 2003 (only uses 140 mb of memory compaired to vista's almost 1gb and XPs 256-512) i could play 2 games at once... hell even 2 SE5s at once if it lets you run 2 instances, lol.
Civilization 4 with its 10 hour load times end-game would be great if you want to flip between to TBS games.
Re: The **MOST** Valuable Feature That Could Be Added To The Gam
I'm not a game programmer (I have looked into it but I just don't have the artistic talent) but my understanding is that when you tab out of the game it stops drawing the screen, now if the screen is being drawn in the same thread as the turn processing, it stops the game processing while it waits for you to come back so it can start drawing the screen again. This was addressed in a game programming book I bought a couple years ago, its actually a very annoying thing to work with (as far as getting it to start drawing again).
So really this means that Aaron has taken the first step toward multi-threading SE5.

Re: The **MOST** Valuable Feature That Could Be Added To The Gam
Fix bugs first, and think about features after that... Even with the latest patches, I´m still finding games crashing and lots of very annoying bugs.
I think if it is worth to waste my time with this game. Other players (in PBW) have already quit, and I think this is no good for MM...
Re: The **MOST** Valuable Feature That Could Be Added To The Gam
It has been already adressed in a beta patch (this particular case of 'background activitiy) so there is no need to rant about this stuff anymore.
For me it usually never crashes, except I did something wrong with the datafiles. The memory leak is another case, though.
Stating that there are many annoying bugs without naming them does not help MM either. Also you could look at the beta changelogs (either in these forums or the Wiki) to see if any of your many annoying bugs have been adressed already.

but have had several working for me over the years. That question came up several times and they all agreed that ANYTHING can be written so that it will run in the background.
Agreed, u could run in
Agreed, u could run in window mode
