Ship Visual Size

Image de Rilbur
Soumis par Rilbur le Jeu, 2006-11-09 01:09 SE:V MODs

Where do you find the controls to modify how large a ship is displayed as in combat? I wanna tweak the relative sizes of ships for a mod, but can't find the controls. Is it controled in the models/races section instead of vehiclesizes.txt?

Modifying ship display size

Soumis par Kamog le Jeu, 2006-11-09 01:40

Edit the X_Ships_XFileClasses.txt file for the empire, for example, Sergetti_Ships_XFileClasses.txt, that is inside the Empires\Sergetti folder.

Inside the Sergetti_Ships_XFileClasses.txt, change the values of Starting Scale X, Starting Scale Y, and Starting Scale Z for the desired vehicle size.

This will change the displayed size of the ship both in the system view as well as in combat.

So...

Soumis par Rilbur le Jeu, 2006-11-09 01:47

So I'm going to have to go in and edit the race files for my mod?

I can't just have a given ship "size" be so large?

Ship Sizes can be independent

Nope, because Aaron made it so that if you created your own ship set, you could scale it. This is because some 3d programs and people have values set differently, so there needs to be a way to scale them back or scale them up as the case may be.

Lots of extra work

Soumis par Rilbur le Ven, 2006-11-10 00:11

Well, that sounds like a LOT of extra work...

And I'm not entierly sure I understand your explanation of why its set up that way... I could understand race files containing scalers designed to control the size of the ships to bring them "in line" with all the others, but why not have similar controls that cross all races in the vehicle sizes...

Scaling Ships

Soumis par Dragagon le Ven, 2006-11-10 00:36

The trouble with setting a default size is that many program scale things already, when you build a model, the program has a set size, but many people, for fine scaling can use 10 to 100x the size and just scale it back. by allowing the game to scale it via a file, i don't necessarily have to create 2 models, one for a ship and one for a fighter, if i want them the same model but different sizes, i can set the scale in the file. This also works for small/medium/heavy fighters. Its a far simpler method than saying "you MUST have ship type Alpha be size XxYxZ." it also helps those who make new ship types. they don't have to go read that a frigate is 10x10x10 and so an escort would need to be 8x8x8 to be smaller. they can make it any size, and in the file tweak the model to be just a tad smaller than a frigate.

Its all a matter of forcing the ship set makers into a size restriction, or allowing them to scale it as they need it.

Wait....

Soumis par Rilbur le Ven, 2006-11-10 11:51

I understand why there has to be controls in the race section, what I don't get is why there isn't a DUPLICATE controll over in the vehicle sizes section that is universal. As it stands ATM, if someone adds a new race (shipset) it won't work "right" with my upcoming mod unless I go in and add that race myself....
