SEV Sphere World Space Stations don't Attack

Soumis par Firestrand le Ven, 2006-11-03 17:38 Bug Reports

Version [1.08]
I built a Sphere world and 3 Space Stations (the number I had when this happened).
An enemy attacked the sphere world, and my space stations could have easily overwhelmed the two ships. However the enemy simply attacked the sphere world directly and destroyed it. The space stations never even fired. After the battle I had three space stations floating alone in the middle of the sphere world. Not sure what I can change to fix this AI wise, but it shouldn't work that way. The space stations should defend what they are attached to even a sphere world.

Sector?

Soumis par Rilbur le Dim, 2006-11-05 10:21

Were they in the same sector as the attack occured in? Its a known issue that they don't go from one sector to another to defend... Whether or not thats a bug is unkown.

I can't see into the sphere

Soumis par Firestrand le Lun, 2006-11-06 17:02

I can't see into the sphere world, but I would assume that the Space Stations orbit around the center of the sphere. So more than likely they are several sectors away from the surface of the sphere world. I would still consider this a bug. The attacking ships should not be able to attack the planet without defeating the star base defenders, or the attacking ships should at least have to come within range of the defenders. In the case of the sphere worlds I am not sure what the answer is, since they are SO large. Possibly making the attacking ships target the center point to cause damage to the sphere world. Thus they would have to come within range of the defenders.

I would also really like a way to see through to the interior of the sphere world, it would make some game play easier. This same issue would probably exist with a ring world, I just haven't tried that.

Bases are bugged.

Soumis par Sabin Stargem le Ven, 2006-11-10 01:07

There is an serious problem with bases. They can't attack, and their shield ratings are not taken into account during battles. I have had my weakest ships effortlessly destroy bases in the simulator, and that is annoying since I can't establish any long-term defensive facilities. Also, baseships have that problem. This is an seriously bad thing, considering how this results in the emprical equilivent of paperweights.

You know, ringworlds and sphereworlds are so frelling huge, that I don't really think space stations would be the most effective method of defense anyways. You would hypothetically need at least one in every sector around the outside.

Please check that you have enough supply on the bases, it sounds like you're running low or out.

Valid Point

Soumis par Firestrand le Mer, 2006-11-15 17:38

You have a valid point. It may be that a sphere world or ring world would require a base ship versus a star base. That way it could move, albiet slowly, towards attackers.

Maybe a "fix" would be to pop a warning to a user trying to build a star base on a ringworld or sphereworld. Something to alert a user that it will not provide any defense to the structure. Maybe suggest lots of weapons platforms or ships instead.

Stations

Soumis par evilginger le Mer, 2006-11-15 18:54

I thought stations only defended one hex and would not be the best way of defending multi hex structures like ring and sphere worlds. If you have the tech to build them then you should be able to build perfectly adequate armed satellites fighters and weapons platforms which could be at the point of attack where stations might not be. Its not as if you are pushed for space on these things is it.

The other point is that big bases do eat ordinance supplies especially if armed with lots of missiles

how about

Soumis par Thunar le Ven, 2006-11-17 10:09

building station on the wormholes that enter the system. Make sure enemies can't enter the system by reducing the number of incoming wormholes and prevent creation of wormholes in system ...

That would work

Soumis par evilginger le Ven, 2006-11-17 16:40

I think that would work as well but for close in defence I think fighters satellites and Defence bases are the way to go. Though I have never built one of these preferring to stick to building Suns from Nebulae and then the planets to surround them. For some reason any start point even the good ones have far too many useless or occupied systems adjacent
