New Stuff?

Soumis par LordMaliki le Mar, 2006-10-31 00:16 Space Empires V General

So I played SE4 to death and had alot of fun. Before that I played SE3 about half as much and the main reason I bought SE5 was the hope for some new things. However, I don't see much new in 5 other than graphically (which graphics don't make a game) and research setup. I did however hear something somewhere about a possible expansion? Is this confirmed or am I just out of luck for new stuff (don't say mods, that's not what I'm talking about and it was in 4 as well)?

In se4 we got sphereworlds/ringworlds as well as entire new tech tree's that could be acessed through racial points. This was/is a major difference between 3 and 4. Where's the major game-changing difference between 4 and 5? I was kinda hoping for some new racials at the very least. Or even ships you could build that would generate resources on their own like mobile farming ships or atomic colliders allowing for play as a truely nomadic empire (perhapse an example of a new racial tree? I think that's how it was done in pirates&nomad's mod in se4.), many players mentioned them back on the shrapnel forums but I see none of this in implementation.

/sigh, I was just hoping for something new.

Big improvement for combat

Soumis par Captain Kwok le Mar, 2006-10-31 01:28

I'm not going to go through a whole list of differences, but one of the biggest improvements is the new combat system. Gone are the days of lopsided SE:IV combat. Sticking out tongue

That it’s easier for fast

Soumis par evilginger le Jeu, 2006-11-02 04:51

That it’s easier for fast unarmed ships to escape in combat makes it more fun as it’s now fun to do your scout running away from the blockade type fights tactically

The graphics are nicer which isn’t major but it helps and I like the fact that you now actually have to survey systems to find the good stuff especially early on or if you don’t have high level sensors.

The diplomatic side of it is better I think though you have to watch yourself with treaty clauses.

This is both a plus and a minus. I had a game a while back where the computer had a mine layer and some attack ship that they'd build with the do not get hurt stratagy somehow. Another computer player spent every turn attacking these two ships which were faster than it's assulting ship. This resulted in game turns up to 2 minutes. I ended up having to take over the computer's turn and kill those ships manually to get the game to run at a decent rate again.

Surveying systems is good but that's not a major gamechanging thing. In se4 all you had to do is enter a system to show everything and it now takes a few turns so yeah, there's a difference there, but it's a little one.

I would agree with you there but bugs with the neutral empires not responding to messages (at least I'm assuming it's a bug) makes that a little bit less effective as a difference.

In effect from se3 to se4 we got a totally different game, many liked it and many hated it but in the end there were more people playing se4 than se3. I was hoping for the same when se5 released so it was a bit of a dissapointment, at least for me, when it was mostly the same game style as se4. It feels like I'm playing se4 with slower game turns and a few more small bugs. We'll see what I think when a few more patches and player mods release.

I know but

Soumis par evilginger le Ven, 2006-11-03 17:21

I like SEV I am not knocking SEIV I racked up many months playing over about two years on it and would still be if I hadn’t lost the disk in a house fire a couple of years ago. I think SEV is more of the same in many ways but bugs not with standing some of it is defiantly done in a way I find more fun.

Surveying systems, resuply, the research tree effectively being open ended I like long games in big universes so tended to max out techs in my favourite areas. I also like the diplomacy as I like to be able to specify the treaties in that detail even if you have to be more on your toes. The combat system also suits me well as I like fighting my own battles

Ok it needs debugging but it will be and there are enough Modders about that you will find a mod you like even if you don’t like the game as it comes out of the box.

I don't like the surveying thing

I find this feature kind of annoying so I always research sensors way up first thing in a game. Plus it's kind of anachronistic - we have the technology today that we could probably make a probe to identify all the planets in a solar system within a few hours or even minutes. We're getting pretty close to making satellites that can even find and image planets around other stars from here on Earth long before we could ever go there. Just a dedicted guy with a nice telescope in his backyard on one of the alien planets could probably find most of the rest of them in a few days. You'd think an advanced spacefaring race wouldn't have to wander around an alien solar system for months to accomplish the same task.

I think it would be nice if there was an option to make all systems fully surveyed for planets as soon as you visit them. Probably wouldn't be so hard to just get rid of the "fog". The sensors would still be used, but just for detecting ships and small stuff like that.

SE is so customisable

Soumis par evilginger le Dim, 2006-11-05 00:49

That doesn’t surprise me in the least as even without getting into mudding space empires has a history of being highly customisable.

I also research Sensors fairly early even though I like fog of war mostly because I don’t like the idea of other empires sneaking up on me so one of the first units I build is an unarmed satellite with a level four or so sensor and deploy it in orbit around every colony even before I have met any of the neighbours.
