Is there going to be a map maker?

Submitted by cirlin on Mon, 2006-09-25 11:38. SE:V MODs

Does anyone know if there is going to be a map creator like in SEIV? I have a particular layout of systems to make, and I'm hoping it will be as easy as in the last game.

There was talk of making one - but it won't be with the release. However, you can choose starting points in SE:V at least.

Really? Sigh... that's disappointing. Half the fun of the mod is recreating the political and strategic situation of the story (i'm not going to mention what it's based on because everyone who's tried to do a public mod of the story has been stamped on rather firmly by copywrite lawyers....the initials are HH though Smiling
What do you mean about picking the starting points?

As you can guess from my username, I think I might have an idea about what story you're talking about. I've always felt that either Space Empires was inspired by the books written by this certain author, or this certain author writes his books based on his games of Space Empires. I think it's a little bit of both.

Which brings to mind the Moon that was really a StarShip.
I wonder if we could make a StarShip as big as a Moon.

Well HH means nothing to me,

Submitted by LordHavoc on Sat, 2006-09-30 17:27.

Well HH means nothing to me, and there are a lot of Weber's out there so that doesn't help either. I can understand authors getting uppity when their stories get ripped off, since thats the only thing they can copywrite. They can't copywrite any of the 'technology' anymore than they can copywrite 'words'.

What I see within the game is a good use of solid sci-fi ideas, centred around a kick-arse strategic combat system with the ability to completely customize any combat or non combat unit within the game.

If anyone can see 'bits of this program/book' or 'bits of that', it's because MM have stuck to the winning formula that is sci-fi as a whole.

Oh, and baseships are sooo Battlestar Galactica!

Its on my list of Mods I'm going to make...and the way I see it, as long as I'm not charging money for it, I dont see how that can really be a breach of any form of copywrite...

Bascially good luck getting blood out of this turnip...

Money doesn't enter into it. You're using his setting, therefore breaching copyright.

No blood, but if Weber got annoyed enough he'd easily get your webspace and whoever was hosting it shut down.

How is an HH mod any

Submitted by dwiebe18 on Tue, 2006-10-03 03:02.

How is an HH mod any different from a Startrek mod, or a Babylon 5 Mod, or a starwars mod for that matter, they are all copyrighted up the whaazoo and could do exactly the same thing. Has that stopped anyone from doing it? No. Thats not gonna stop me from making a Stargate type mod. If anything I think it would be a bit of free advertising, just hearing about this HH and David Weber has got me interested in looking up a few of his books.

I don't know the exact

Submitted by cirlin on Tue, 2006-10-03 14:11.

I don't know the exact reasons, but I have read from some of the people who'd mods were canceled, as well as the makers of the table top game (Saganami Island Tactical Simulator, http://adastragames.com/ Smiling) that they (the laywer types) are concerened about mods being a sticky issue for any future HH computer games. For example, they're worried that if they make an official game in the future some mod maker is going to come along and sue them for using mechanics they say they invented (I can't imagine that actually working, but I couldn't image someone sueing because they got burnt by hot coffee either).
Naturally they're also worried about mods cutting into profits from any hypothetical official games, so I think they just decided to avoid the whole issue by not allowing anything at this point.

It isn't any different. Which is to say if the Stargate people hear about your mod, and decide they don't like it, expect to get a Cease and Desist letter shortly thereafter, making all your work useless and/or illegal.

I don't say I agree with it (I host the freaking SEIV image mod, which has a ridiclous number of copyrighted images in it..) but that's how it goes.

I'll buy the game when the map editor is out!

Submitted by Realtime on Sat, 2006-10-21 08:36.

Seems like a good advance over SEIV (I own) only played the demo so far. I know the Malfador crew will kill bugs and enhance the game. But, for my mods I need a map editor without question...Oh please Malfador Gods hera my plea! Oh yeah, put in a planetary system randomizer based on one the the systemstype files so I can place the stars and them punch random for the planets selections. Saves a ton of work! Then if I want I can edit whatever I want, or just play without knowing the compositions of the star systems. Great for replay value. I use starmaps made from CHview and a couple of other programs so I can get very accurate starmaps.. I'm kind of a realism freak! So my Mods are like that. I do Space 2300 (old GDW game system) and traveller (old GDW gamesystem), Some Star Trek, Man/Kzinti Wars, Very obscure Science Fiction stuff, shows my age. Hopefully PK is out making a proportions mod as I type. (I do my own stuff too!)

You could create a system pattern to generate maps in the pattern you want.
See FQM for examples.

You can do that in the data files... take a look at the Diamond quadrant. For even more fun, write a little script to pick random system types to go in the fixed locations and write them to a new QuadrantTypes.txt (see FQM for an example of such scripts).

Edit:
How the hell did this get on the recent posts page, when there haven't been any new posts for 2 months??

I think these old threads pop up when someone views them. On the home page of this website, there's a place for "recienty viewed threads".

As long as it did pop up, it seems a likely place to ask a related question about the official map compiler - is it yet possible to either export random maps generated in the game to the text format used by the compiler, or some player-created utility to randomly generate maps in the text format used by the compiler? I don't really want to manually create maps from scratch, just selectively edit randomly generated ones.

On the subject also discussed in this thread re the relationship between David Weber's work and Space Empires, there is one but it predates the Honor Harrington series. Space Empires from the start had a very clear influence from the board game "Starfire" (especially clear to Starfire veterans prior to SEIV). David Weber was once the lead designer for games in the Starfire series, when it was owned by Task Force Games and he was employed by them (and not yet a fiction author). He also edited the Starfire column in Task Force's house magazine. Steve White replaced Weber as Task Force's Starfire guy. Later still, Weber & White collaborated on novels set in the Starfire background, which for a long time had a symbiotic relationship with Starfire (in that the later Starfire designers felt obliged to put everything from the Weber-White books into Starfire expansion products). This in turn influenced Space Empires but less directly (it not officially being "Computer Starfire"). This was all well before Honor Harrington, though.

Even so, I never touch the "recently viewed" box (in fact, its disabled in my account). This thread was near the top of the Recent Comments page when I replied to it. If viewing a thread causes it to be pushed to the top of the Recent Comments page, this Drupal software is even more horribly broken than I thought...

A definite "no" on the former, and a "not that I'm aware of" on the latter.

Actually, the answer to the latter is yes: http://spaceempires5.com/en-US/project/SE5MapCreator

However, it won't work with BM 1.10 (it works with earlier versions, though), and the compliler might not be able to complile the map if it has stellar objects with names other than the ones in stock (meaning it doesn't work with FQM).

Does this new BM 1.10 incompatibility give the "error 13, type mismatch" I am getting when I try to generate a random map?

I recall getting the editor to work with the older BM by copying the BM data files to the editor and (temporarily) to the root Data folder for the compilation. Now, I just get the type mismatch when I have it generate random systems.
