Planet conditions turned Deadly - now what?

Submitted by cdagnon on Fri, 2006-10-27 10:35. Space Empires V FAQs

I have one planet in my home system where the conditions have reverted from Mild to Deadly. I don't know how long ago, and I don't remember anything being reported in my turn log about it.

First: How could this have happened? As soon as I found out I sent a ship over, but there is no enemy around. The only ship I've seen in my home sector not mine was one of my ally's ships and that was a while ago. I also now have prevention of level-1-plague facilities in the system, only the first 6 Intel attacks worked, and I have level 18 Tachyon sensor satellites everywhere and I'm not seeing a direct attack.

Second: What is happening? I'm having a hard time finding any information about why the status changed - I can't find a readout about it being a plague, natural or otherwise, I also don't know if it is caused by a weapon or some remote technology...

Third: How do I solve it? The population has a new reproductive rate of 0% though the population is still growing slightly. Should I give a shot to making a ship with a Medical Bay to see if there is any plague to cure? Should I just manually transport people onto the planet where they live a neutered existence?

Any hints would be appreciated!

-Chris

Counter-intelligence, for one thing

Submitted by Scinex on Fri, 2006-10-27 11:46.

I'd bet the conditions of the planet were damaged by enemy intelligence operations. Only way to improve planetary living conditions is to build a climate control facility, which gradually brings the population rate up.

Thanks... I suppose it is

Submitted by cdagnon on Fri, 2006-10-27 22:24.

Thanks... I suppose it is possible it was from intelligence, however I have a new theory: maybe it was a space storm. One is wandering around the system, and I don't specifically recall it passing over that planet, but it is possible.

I didn't know storms could affect planets - and am I wrong on that?

But yes, I'm aiming for that Climate Control Facility, though I'm hoping to get enough tech that the 1% or 2% gain over a year goes a little faster...

Thanks!

You could also try building medical bays and buildings that increase the birth rate. Migration might be helpful too, though the other Empires would probably want an stupid attribute to be part of the treaty. If worse comes to worse, you could abandon the planet if it isn't an profitable venture.

Interesting follow-up: I

Interesting follow-up:

I finally have Climate Control Facility going on that planet, but a couple years before that even though there is a 0% reproduction rate, that planet managed to grow population to capacity! I've been able to cull people off of there and plant them on planets less reproductive.

I guess I've got a large number of thrill-seekers in my empire Smiling

Migration perhaps?

Submitted by Captain Kwok on Sun, 2006-10-29 09:21.

Did you have races in your empire that could breath the planet's atmosphere? They'd move there via migration...

Black ops

I am pretty sure it was some ones intelligence op probably done before you got the Counter intelligence going which slowly degraded the planets conditions but you did not notice till it had turned deadly. There need not be any entry of an enemy ship into your system to launch an Intel attack

I have the same problem 1

Submitted by tonyart on Sun, 2006-11-12 07:10.

I have the same problem 1 planet is now dedly, but there is a massive cloud over 10 grids in the system, (it was not there before when I colonized the planet) and there is no info on the cloud when you click on a grid under the cloud, seems the cloud is growing bigger another planet is almost on top of the cloud ( 1 square away)

Thats probably a random event

Submitted by evilginger on Sun, 2006-11-12 08:03.

That’s probably some sort of random event which has created a space storm. With the right technology you can clean up such storms but I am not sure what that is as I haven’t had the game that long and come across this problem

Interesting

Submitted by Thy Reaper on Sun, 2006-11-12 08:33.

There are the usual storms in the game, but none of them affect planets, and none of them ever move. This is probably a big random event, but I've never seen it.

Deadly planets and Atmo plants

Submitted by cdagnon on Sun, 2006-11-12 20:38.

Eventually the Climate Control has reduced it from deadly - funny thing is that the Atmo Plant change the planet to a breathable atmosphere before the condition got to 'Unpleasant'.

For a couple of the side questions: I have only a homogenous Empire, so no one could breath the atmosphere. I destroyed all those storms just to show them who is boss. Am still doubting it was a sabotage, and I thought I was paying close attention to the logs but maybe it was a disaster. Another planet in the same system had the same thing happen, but on an enemy's planet.

Oh, and the Deadly planet had a respectible reproduction rate before being reduced from 'Deadly'.

noob question: does the effect of the Climate Control Fac wear off if you remove it to make room for something else?

The climate change is a permanent one, not tied to the building, so you can remove them.

It could have also been caused by a random event. If you build a climate control device it will improve the conditions.

Random event. Happened to me today. One small planet turned deadly, population stopped to reproduce so i evacuated it and abandoned it.

Also today, due to a random event, i lost the most powerfull ship in my whole fleet to a "mutiny" and it vanished. It was the leader of my biggest fleet. A bit frustrating.

Without ammo, nice guns are just sophisticated clubs.
