Supplies

SirKid's picture
Submitted by SirKid on Mon, 2006-09-25 07:02. Space Empires V FAQs

How are supplies generated? I've over built and everthing is out of supplies, even my home world. Where did I go wrong? Without a manual I'm lost. Can someone post a short rundonw on the supply system and how it works?

I haven't seen this problem before.

You should try on the IRC channel - irc.freenode.net #spaceempires

If this is a recurring problem, send a savegame to Malfador -

Resupply Depot?

Submitted by Captain Kwok on Mon, 2006-09-25 10:52.

Do you not have a Resupply Depot? Have you been building Resupply Depots elsewhere as well?

Use the cheat ~restoresupplies~ to refill your ships/planets to fix your game.

Submitted by SirKid on Mon, 2006-09-25 11:20.

Hmm interesting. Yes I make sure to build a Re-supply Depot in every sector. I just thought I was using up supplies faster that I was generating them. How are supplies generated? I will try and find my SEIV manual and see if that can help. If it turns out to be a bug I'll send the file.

Supplies in SE:IV and SE:V

Submitted by Captain Kwok on Mon, 2006-09-25 11:44.

Supplies generated by Resupply Depots in SE:IV was unlimited per turn and ships only could resupply in a sector with a depot. However, in SE:V, Resupply Depots generate a fixed number of supplies per turn and distribute a certain number to all ships in the system and a bit more to ships in the same sector.

Planet Supply

Submitted by SirKid on Mon, 2006-09-25 13:23.

Ok one last question. Where does planet supply come from and what effect does it have on the planet? Is there any reason to be moving supplies around with cargo ships? Ok thats two questions.

By the way thanks for all the help.

Just to let you know when I loaded up the game my planets were back in supply. Don't know what happened there for a few turns.

Supplies

Submitted by Weber Fan on Mon, 2006-09-25 18:44.

Planets donot use supplies. Planets with supply depots tend to slowly accumulate supplies as any supplies generated by the depot that are not distributed to ships in the star system each turn are added to the planetary supply storage. You can then load supplies from your planetary supply storage into a ship that needs supplies using the cargo tranfer screen.

Supplies are not carried in cargo containers... only supply containers such as engines and the supply component can carry supplies. If you want to move a large amount of supplies off of your planet to travel along with your fleet (thereby expanding your range), you need to build a ship with ALOT of extra supply containers. I recommend a frigate with nothing but engines, sensors, and supply containers (and all the other garbage you have to have).

Also, if you capture an enemy planet, you also capture the supplies stored on that planet... It makes for a great way to refill your fleet for the next attack.

Which brings to mind a question I have: can you destroy your own supplies on a planet you know is about to be taken over in order to keep the enemy from getting them? (sort of like what the Russians did to Napolean)

you can destroy your own

Submitted by hopfyz on Mon, 2006-09-25 21:56.

you can destroy your own supplies on your planet, go to cargo orders, then jettison cargo, and at the bottom of the list you can get rid of supplies and ordinance

Supply Depots

Submitted by SirKid on Tue, 2006-09-26 11:58.

I just read in another thread that having multiple supply depots in a system will generate more supplies in that system. That’s good to know. So if I’m going to maintain a large fleet in a system I better have a few supply depots in that system.

Yes that is correct....

Submitted by dwiebe18 on Wed, 2006-09-27 05:54.

Multiple supply depots does help I believe, also the scrap cargo command used to get rid of facilities i think cna be used to dispose of facilities, supply, ordinance, and even population, although im not sure about the last. Could be a relatively painless way of dealing with pesky alien populations left behind after a capture. But THAT would just be evil, MWUAHHAAAHAAAHAAAHAAA!!!

Cargo

Submitted by tmcc on Wed, 2006-09-27 16:31.

Once you get used the concept of treating everything as cargo it's pretty easy. Have to remember though that facilities, population, cargo, supplies and ordnance all have there own, non shared, storage space.

I guess it was just simpler to lump it all into the one category. You dont have to go through 3 or 4 different windows to scrap, the reasearch centres asn those last 50 fighters you made buy mistake. Sticking out tongue

related question, supplies and carrier or drone design

Submitted by rukoth on Thu, 2006-09-28 20:10.

a related question, how do you create a carrier or drone launcher with sufficient supply storage now?

My best carrier design could launch only about half its capacity before running dry, and due to the cost of all the supply storages took a ridiculous amount of time to build. this is despite having several levels in cargo and engines
The ship itself was the basics, plus engines, plus the minimum 50 percent fighter bays, a shield generator, and everything else supplies, sans a couple ordinance.

The drone launcher i built, capable of housing a whopping 6 drones, expelled 2(1 half empty) and was left dry to limp back to a supply depot.

Am i moron?how do you guys handle this?

and a second , sort of related question, how does the per second launch rate of fighters, mines and drones translate into a per turn rate? it makes no sense that if i can launch all my mines and drones in a single battle i can't do the same in a single turn, but instead i'm being allowed to deploy 2 at most, but often being restricted to 1, or being denied to deploy any for some reason.

Resuply Depots

Submitted by XL-HeavyD on Tue, 2006-10-03 15:48.

I have found out that its extreem important to have a large amount of supply depots on your construction planets so you can fill up your battle fleet before you send them on their marry way.

I only have one question its seems to me that a fleet uses up their supply faster than a single ship. Is it just me or have more people noticed this ????

Supply and usage

Submitted by gnol on Tue, 2006-10-03 16:04.

First of all, you do not need any supply depots at all at your construction planets. Ships are fully loaded with both supplies and ordnance when they are constructed.

Regarding fleet supply usage, there seems to be a bug causing fleets to use too much (many?) supplies.

The supply usage model for

Submitted by dwiebe18 on Wed, 2006-10-04 03:01.

The supply usage model for fleets in the demo is broken, its wierd some thing like a ship that requires 240 to move by itself, in a fleet of four of the same ship then requires 240*4 per ship to move or something like that, its a bug.

related question, supplies and carrier or drone design

Submitted by morphh on Fri, 2006-10-06 10:01.

I'm having the same problem as rukoth. I build several carriers loaded with fighters - go into battle and completely destroy the enemy, however, after the battle I'm out of supplies and only have a movement of 1. What gives?! How do I fix this? - Morphh

carrier supply drain workaround

Submitted by AngleWyrm on Fri, 2006-10-06 10:28.

What's working for me is a supertanker fleeted with the carrier group. Frigate loaded with nothing but Supply Storage and a few extra Ordinance. After combat, just transfer supplies over to the carrier. My carriers suck down around 5~10k per attack (depending on fighter loadout), so it's easier to just build another tanker!

The first few supplies transfered to the carrier don't look like anything is happening, I guess it goes to stocking fighters first. But it eventually loads the carrier back up.

Also, I leave the carrier behind if I can engage without fighters. Like landing marines on an undefended planet. Or just one frigate versus my whole battle group.

That way it doesn't waste all those supplies launching fighters.

a thought for another carrier supply work around

Submitted by rukoth on Fri, 2006-10-06 10:42.

the demo died on me, and so close to release, can't bring myself to mess with it anymore, but I did have an idea from reading your post. like you said, after deploying/recovering the fighters, the first resources you transfer go to the fighters, then you start filling up the carrier, so could you deploy the fighters before you move your carrier away from the construction yard/supply depots, fill them up, then recover them and then restock the carrier, thus leaving the system with fully loaded fighters and a fully loaded carrier as well, or will it just loose the resources at the end of the turn or something?

Also, thank you for the advice.
