Escape key priority

Submitted by ShunterAlhena on Thu, 2006-10-26 13:57. Space Empires V General

I've been skimming the forums and most bugs/annoyances bothering me are already reported, except one:

I use the Escape key vastly, I click on various windows then close them quickly without having to hunt the Close button.
However, enlarged pictures (like the one that comes up when you click a ship's portrait and it's displayed in a larger frame, consuming about 1/2 of the screen) are topmost when they come up, but they actually close last when pressing the Esc key. That means when I view a ship's properties and out of sheer curiosity click to view it's portrait, then hit Esc to dismiss it quickly, the Properties windows disappears instead, leaving me with the picture onscreen.
This is hell more annoying when designing a ship: the half-completed design simply disappears without a confirmation dialog.

So two suggestions: make the enlarged pictures close first when pressing Esc, and popping up a confirmation dialog when closing ship design.

Interesting but not a big deal

Is this really a priority? With all the AI, diplomacy, and ordnance problems, I don't want Aaron spending time on something small like this (I'm sure he won't go with this first, but still). Am I the only one who doesn't find it that hard to manually close the windows?

No confirmation!

Submitted by Thy Reaper on Thu, 2006-10-26 14:11.

I don't want to have to click 'Yes, I did actually mean to click Esc/Close' in another box that pops up, so if that started happening I'd be quite upset. The only time I don't mind it is the end of turn button that tells you what you may be missing.

But otherwise, this is definitely a bug that should be fixed.

Submitted by Chris on Thu, 2006-10-26 14:19.

I do not believe the OP is saying that this problem is a priority, but rather the problem is with the priorities coded into the escape key functioning. That the game places a higher priority on the picture window than the details window, which to the gamer is more important. The fact that it is also visualy underneath the picture window makes it's closure odd as well.

Submitted by ShunterAlhena on Thu, 2006-10-26 14:23.

It's not a priority or anything, I can live with it Smiling just a nagging thing that I thought might be fixed if there's a couple of minutes of time to shift some internal priority numbers around.
As for the confirmation dialog cropping up, there's a section in Empire Options that lets you specifically disable or enable certain confirmation dialogs. It's not everybody's thing of course, I personally would find it useful and some other people might, too.

You've misread his use of the term priority. He doesn't mean that this issue is a priority. He is referring to the "escape key priority", or the 'order in which the escape key closes windows'.

I know that he meant the priority of which window was on top. I guess I just don't know how much I trust the design team to decide which of these bugs is most important and which isn't, especially since I hear Aaron is currently working on fixing the Demo over the full version. I guess I just would rather people only post real, serious issues that need to be fixed ASAP. But I am using the Balance Mod and that has actually fixed most of the issues I had. So I'm actually pretty happy with it as is now.

Fixing the demo isn't a big

Submitted by Chris on Thu, 2006-10-26 18:06.

Fixing the demo isn't a big loss. A bad demo (the current one borders on bad...) will scare away as many or more people than it will bring to the game, and since this is a niche game in a niche genre, Aaron is doing us all a favor by trying to bring in as much new blood as possible. In the end, whats another handful of weeks playing with bugs that we have been playing with all along?

Demo 1.08 is complete

Submitted by ShunterAlhena on Fri, 2006-10-27 14:43.

The demo's now complete. Smiling (It would be interesting to check whether it has the ordnance bug too, so it is indeed completely 1.08-based, or known major bugs are fixed but Aaron didn't want the demo to have a higher version number than the stock game itself.)
Hopefully he'll revert to the main game now, as he always did. In the meantime the Balance Mod and the 1.08 patch makes the game quite playable IMHO.
