TCP/IP Setup

Submitted by Katsury on Mon, 2006-10-23 22:12. Space Empires V FAQs

Okay this is frustrating me a little. How exactly do I set up a TCP/IP game?

I already know to set it to Simotaneous, different machines, etc.

Where I'm confused is when it comes to the players connecting to me. What IP address do I use and port number do I put into the Settings at the connect window? I'm on a router as well and I've already forwarded the port I set into the game. But is there a special port I should use? Help! lol

Routers...

Submitted by Rilbur on Tue, 2006-10-24 11:13.

Routers make life a pain, since your computers IP address will NOT be the one you need to be found. Find a website out there that will tell you what your IP address is, and give that to players you want to connect with. Also, use ports that your router has open -- your best bet is to keep the defaults, and just make sure the router leaves it open. Hit "wait for players" and they should be able to connect to you, I think.

You can also check your Public IP on your routers configuration pages (192.168.1.1 for Linksys, 192.168.0.1 for Netgear) - there is usually a 'status' link you can click.

Your other option is to go to 'whatismyip.com'

Okay

Submitted by Katsury on Wed, 2006-10-25 13:32.

Okay, friend was able to connect after a few modifications to the router and my DSL. Left the ports open, etc. etc. And he was able to connect. But right after he did, the screen went to windowed mode with a plain white interface, and a few seconds after, it displayed an error stating something along the lines of "Canvas Cannot Draw" or something like that.

After clicking okay for the error, the game locks up in the plain white screen. Nothing happens. I waited a few minutes thinking it's the transfer lagtime from my router to my computer, but the light on my computer stopped blinking meaning the computer wasn't using any rescources. And after I tried to C+A+D to close the crashed program, another error popped up along the lines of "Allocation error found" and displayed Hex numbers which I know to be memory PID.

What am I doing wrong here?

Right i had a quick look at

Right i had a quick look at the IP setup. I'm going to suggest using the default ports. And having both Player and Host ports open on both yours and your friends routers/firewalls.

6599 Player & 6598 Host

HOST
Go to What Is My IP to get your IP address and send that to the player. Host the game using the default port of 6598 and make sure that you've opened TCP (and possibly UDP) ports on your virtual network & firewall.

Player
Put in the IP address given to you by the Host and make sure that you have port 6599 open on your virtual network & firewall. Again you may have to use UDP, in fact I'm almost 90% sure you do.

If you can't get it working that way then lug your computer to your friends house and have a weekend lan party.
