Bugs, broken-ness, and unplayability |
I realise some people say with autosave every turn and reload they can play the game. I realise these same people try to defend what is a shoddy product. Despite these arguments, this game is all but unplayable. I have been autosaving every turn. If the game crashes or locks up, I reload and keep on trucking. Despite the massive annoyance, it looks like it could be a great game and I had fun. But now, after about fifty turns, the saves have all become corrupted after the last crash. In the interest of trying to help the developers fix the game, here is a list of all the bugs/issues I have encountered. To those interested in a playable game... you may want to wait for another patch or two. I wish I had known the game was this poorly put together and I would have opted not to buy it. For now, I guess I've been suckered into an 'investment'. Annoyance aside, once the game is playable again, it looks like it will be a winner. I just wish I the company had chosen to test longer than they had instead of pawning off a broken game on consumers. I don't expect I'll be buying another game by Malfador without a great deal of forum research first.
1. If I try to deploy a sattelite while orbitting an uncolonized planet, I get a CTD. This may be something you are not supposed to do, but the attempt resulted in a crash.
Actually... after reading up... that's the only one I got that it doesn't look like someone else already posted. I got a lot of others though.
Well... good luck to those dogged enough to keep trying. And shame on Malfador for releasing what feels like a bad beta. Here's to the day the game is finished so I can give it another row.
Cheers,
EM
Well, I haven't had a single
Well, I haven't had a single crash since the patch, and I've played for hours. I had enormous problems pre-patch, but all the CTDs have been fixed for me.

It will happen
From what I hear, the other Space Empires games were nightmares when they were first released, but Aaron fixed them to perfection. Or near perfection, as it seems to me Organic Armor doesn't do anything on SE:IV
In about a month or so, all will be much better.

With all these people, you would expect one of them to carry an iguana around...

Huh, i've seen organic armor regenearte in SEIV... its just so rare for a damaged component to rebuild itself that you don't see it often.
Thought the complete-repair-after-battle-ends is nice.

I was crashing too
The game got unplayable for me on a few levels. But by experimenting and using some workarounds, I'm enjoying the core game, while waiting for the patches.
The biggest thing I had to change was the Galaxy size. I've been sticking to medium and small size galaxys and haven't hung yet. I prefer Large (and expect to mod uber-large) galaxys, but I'm still enjoying myself for now.
Read through the 1.08 bug list and workarounds in the meantime, it makes the game playable while we wait...

How the game was released in
How the game was released in this state is amazing. It's tragic as I can see an amazing game down the line when everthing is sorted out, it will be king of 4X.The game reviews are going to pan it as a unplayable mess. The game only needed a 3 month delay.
95 % of last released games
95 % of last released games are in beta stage
the guild 2, gothic 3 - companies spend money on advertising instead of the testing and finishing games.
SEV should be patched with beta patches quite regularly now - community will help the game just like another beta 4x game Galactic Civilization 2

Release dates
Unfortunatly, Malfador didn't have much of a choice. It's a one man company, and doesn't have the resources to push back the release date -- especially with SFI having given a definate one (presumably without asking MM if that was ok) that they probably didn't want to go back on.
