Ship Model Modding can you take parts and add them together?

Submitted by Abyss on Mon, 2006-10-23 15:13. SE:V MODs

I wanted to make different ships, but modeling is hard, so I was wondering if it was possible to mix the other ship around, like take a part of one ship and add it to another ship to make a combo ship, that would be pretty cool. I tried to open up .x files in 3dsmax 8, but it said that it coulnd' t open it, is this possible?

There's a shareware program

Submitted by ekolis on Mon, 2006-10-23 16:00.

There's a shareware program called DoGA which lets you mix and match parts; it was very popular for making SE4 ships. It will export to .X as well (don't think it can import .X though). The only problem with it is that if you have a lot of overlapping pats, it doesn't optimize the model, so you have to be VERY careful not to use too many polygons in your models! You can find DoGA here: http://www.doga.co.jp
If you want something more powerful but still not too hard to use, I would personally recommend Wings 3D (http://www.wings3d.com) or Art of Illusion (http://www.artofillusion.org). I also just happened to find out about this new program called ShapeShop (http://unknownroad.com/shapeshop) which looks to be REALLY easy to use (you just sketch what you want to draw and then tell it how you want it to extend your sketch into thte 3rd dimension - there are some REALLY cool demo videos available, or just try for yourself!) but I haven't had a chance to try it yet so I don't know what formats it exports or how good it is about keeping polygon counts low.

Yeah, DOGA is next to

Yeah, DOGA is next to impossible to use for SE5 ships. Some of its parts alone were over SE5's model limits.

Thanks

Submitted by Abyss on Mon, 2006-10-23 23:07.

Thanks, now I can make models and put them into the game. It works too which is pretty cool, I made a sphere in 3dsmax and exported to .x and replaced it with a carrier, and went into the game then when I did a tactical combat it actually showed up, which is great!

But I still can't upload the carrier ship into 3dsmax to change it or add on to it or to take a part of it with another ship. And that is what I watned to do all along. I searched for .x importer... Am I missing something should I reinstall 3dsmax?

BTW thanks for the quick responses. I'm happy this community is alive.

So no one knows how I can

Submitted by Abyss on Mon, 2006-10-30 23:22.

So no one knows how I can get a SEVG model in 3dsmax? Or how to mix them around? One nice part about SEIVG was how easy it was to mod, its easy to make new pictures of the ships. I wish there was an easy way to make new 3d ships.

I don't know anything about

Submitted by Scillion on Fri, 2006-11-03 15:21.

I don't know anything about 3D or modelling. But I downloaded Blender and have been having loads of fun building my first 3D object.

Once I start making my own ships I will come back and ask how to prepare them for the game, until then I'll just have fun learning the program.

Thx for the info LordHavoc.

Maybe this will work

Submitted by Scillion on Tue, 2006-11-07 10:56.

I took the .x file from the empires section of the game. Random ship.

I used Lithunwrap to load the file(model open .x). I could then see the ship and texture.

I then saved the file as .3ds file.

I then imported it on blender. I can now modify the the ship model. Of course if I do the texture would be off.

I hope this helps.

Dude, your a genius. That

Submitted by Abyss on Sun, 2006-11-12 00:50.

Dude, your a genius. That worked perfectly. Thanks alot, I've used Lith unwrap before, but never thought to use it to convert. Converts the model and texture coordinates great. With just a bit of work needed to move them all onscreen. Thanks.

So a word, if you want to open any of the ship files or something, use Lith Unwrap to open the .x file and then save as something else. You can find it online for free. (Just don't go the main site, they don't support it any more).
