Low Resupply Rate Makes Large Fleets Impractical

Submitted by magogian on Sat, 2006-10-21 19:18. Space Empires V General

Okay, you get a decent sized fleet of ten ships, each which can hold 15,000 supplies. If you deplete the fleet's supplies, resupplying it is practically impossible. Even with multiple resupply buildings in a sector, you still only resupply at a few thousand per turn. So, this fleet which holds 150,000 supplies total takes tens of turns to resupply. What am I missing?

If I'm not missing anything, then this game grinds to a complete halt for me and MUST be fixed in some way.

Exploit: Get 900 to 1800 supplies per planet by building a fight

Submitted by raynor on Sat, 2006-10-21 19:57.

Okay. This is an exploit.

It appears that the game will let you transfer the supplies from a newly built fighter back to the planet. However, you can only do this once per type of fighter becaus the game groups all the fighters in a group and inexplicably says that ALL of the fighters have a combined total of only 900 supplies. Oh, and if you transfer the supplies away from the fighter and then move it, then the game crashes.

Okay. Maybe you shouldn't try this since it clearly wasn't something that anyone before me thought of. Smiling (And it crashes the game.) Smiling

ALL ships are expendable

Submitted by raynor on Sat, 2006-10-21 20:12.

Since it is now infinitely easier to build new ships than it is to resupply them, I guess we need to start treating all ships as expendable--at least until we hit about level 20 Resupply and can start including Quantum Reactor ships in our fleets.

The "solution"

Submitted by AngleWyrm on Sat, 2006-10-21 20:35.

The solution to that is obviously to make it much harder to build new ships. Laughing out loud

Yah, this resupply thing

Submitted by magogian on Sat, 2006-10-21 20:39.

Yah, this resupply thing must be fixed/changed ASAP. It makes the game worthless after 50 or so turns.

I left my resupply buildings

Submitted by Redbull102 on Sat, 2006-10-21 21:01.

I left my resupply buildings as they are, but I changed the value a planet can storage.

My Planet can now store :
Tiny and Small = 50,000 units
Medium and Large = 100,000 units
Huge = 250,000 units

of supply and ordnance.

My Idea behind it was, that you have to be prepared for the wars. And that you should be able to run out of supplies. If you increase the supply generation of the buildings, it will be far to easy.

Build resupply ships

Submitted by RogerN on Sat, 2006-10-21 21:15.

I've found it necessary to build several resupply ships; ships which consist of almost nothing but supply storage. Since new ships are built with full supplies, building these ships is much faster (in the short run) than waiting on resupply depots. Once their supplies are depleted, I'll frequently scrap the ship and build a fresh one to get another quick batch of supplies (if no large stockpiles are already available).

If you're fortunate enough to have a binary or trinary system near your front lines then solar panels work reasonably well. They definitely won't keep your ships topped out, but they provide enough "fumes" to keep them moving.

Okay, so I decided to stop

Submitted by magogian on Sat, 2006-10-21 23:53.

Okay, so I decided to stop complaining and to do something about it. I just added a zero to the "100" multiple in the building file. So, I increased the resupply by a factor of 10. Much more reasonable. It can still take a few turns to resupply an entire fleet - but only a few, not 20 turns like before.

Submitted by Z12LAZARUS on Sun, 2006-10-22 07:57.

just build more than one resupply depot in your major systems >_> lol
Two or three seems to work fine for me. Then lvl it up as you improve engines and such

z12, I explained in my

Submitted by magogian on Sun, 2006-10-22 09:55.

z12,

I explained in my original post, that even with multiple resupply buildings, it isn't enough. Towards the mid-game, your ships can take easily over 15,000 supplies each. Each resupply building, upgraded several levels barely provides over one thousand. So, if you have a fleet of 10 ships holding 15k supplies each, it would take 5 resupply buildings tens of turns to resupply them.

So, no, just building resupply buildings doens't really help.

Stormhound, To edit the

Submitted by magogian on Sun, 2006-10-22 10:01.

Stormhound,

To edit the resupply amount, go under SE5 folder/data. You should see a whole bunch of text files. Find the "Facilities" file and open it. Find the entry for "Resupply Depot." You should see this formula in 4 places in the entry, "1000 + (([%Level%] - 1) * 100)" Change the last "100" to "1000" in each of the four formulas. So, now it should lool like "1000 + (([%Level%] - 1) * 1000)"

And that should fix it.

I recommend copying the file before you alter it and put the file in a safe location, in case you somehow mess it up, or accidently do something wrong. This way, you can easily bring back the original file if something goes wrong.
