New PBEM Game |
I'm looking for players for a PBEM game. I'm a long time SEIV player but need to get my butt kicked a few times to get the feel for SEV
...any takers let me know and I'll be happy to host

I'm interested in multiplayer, *but*...
Given that SEV games can be expected to last 100+ turns, I'd like to see as much tedium as possible eliminated from the PBEM process. I don't like the idea of manually downloading more than 100 save games.
We need a tool, like PBFTP, but which can automatically poll the FTP server and alert you when the next turn is available, then download and launch the game with a single click. And upload the turn when you're done playing.
I'd write it myself, but I think it has to wait until the next SEV patch (at least). Someone reported there wasn't yet a method to launch SEV with command-line parameters to open a particular save file.

Helper programs exist for SE:IV
There are programs that exist of this nature for play-by-web for Space Empires IV and I would expect that they'll be made for SE:V as well. Although in most cases, you're only getting a turn every couple of days so it's not real that much of a hassle to download/upload.

Only 100 Turns?
Most of my games (admitidly, a lot are single player) end up lasting thousands (or over a hundred years, at least, and easily so!). Of course, it helps that I tend to fort up and research instead of conquer.
There are 10 types of people in the world:
Those that understand binary, and those that don't.

se5a was coding a program for PBFTP, not sure how far hes gotten on it though.
PBFTP
How does PBFTP work in SE:V? I mean on a technical level exactly what does the FTP server need to be able to do to make it work.
The main reason I ask is I have my own FTP server and could setup accounts for people to use it for PBFTP if it's not going to require me to do anything much hehe. essentially I can give someone total directory access to one or more dirs they can then manage themselves if they like (i.e. read/write/delete/create/etc) I won't give admin access of course but I am more than willing to create just about any other setup such as individual access to players if nescessary or whatever works. Just let me know if that would help
*EDIT* please note that when I say doesn't require me to do much I just mean on a daily basis not the initial setup effort I'll do what it takes for that hehe.
You've pretty much specified
You've pretty much specified all thats needed, just a folder where all the players have access would just about do it. As PBFTP is simply the option of play by file, but without relying on dodgy email systems.

Looks like he's got something up...
sorry
but I really don't like the slow pace of PBEM... I'm also terrible at most games played that way (but I am fair at blitz games) I just don't enjoy sitting for hours micromanaging every thing that can possibly micromanaged and that hurts in games with such long times between turns hehe.

Helper programs
I'd, for one, disagree with you to some degree here. yeah, it's "not really that much of a hassle", but it is a hassle. the existence of the PBW website, along with its play-by-web runtime client was a HUGE "selling point" of sorts for me when I first discovered SE:IV. The ability to painlessly find, join, and host games, combined with the ability to upload/download the game files automatically without needing to go through the pain of opening my mail, downloading & zipping up files, etc., made (makes) it all priceless!
Even now, I absolutely hate it when PBW is having problems and I do have to revert to some of the more manual steps.
Game length
If my experience of SEIV is any thing to go on most games lasted 1000 turns at a minimum. I also find that with the SEV demo I generally have the makings of a good start at an empire by the time the turn limit comes up at 100 turns

or you could try PBFTP if
or you could try PBFTP if you have access to an FTP server.
I'd play, but I've not goten the full version yet, still waiting for it to ship all the way down to New Zealand.
also, I'd only be interested if it's not stock.
