My treaty prevents colonization in this system...

Submitted by jowe01 on Thu, 2006-10-19 17:35. Space Empires V General

... so claims the game. How come? I do not find any such treaty element. The only thing I have are a couple of non-aggression pacts (most only for neutral systems). Are they the cause?

Non-Aggression = No Colonization

Submitted by Captain Kwok on Thu, 2006-10-19 19:04.

A Non-Aggression treaties either allows a) Party A to colonize only b) Party B to colonize or c) Neither can colonize claimed systems. A claim system is one where you already have a colony.

Thanks for the answer, but are you sure? That is not what the description of the treaty element says. Under "non-aggression" there are three options to choose from: 1) In neutral space (non-colony systems) 2) In all systems 3) Allow colonization of each others system

I have only chosen 1), assuming ´that that meant that if I encounter the other race in a system where neither it nor myself have a colony, we would not attack each other. Does 1) and 2) both mean that we are prohibited from colonizing each other`s systems? In that case the labelling is not very clear.

My understanding is:

If you choose any treaty element except 3) Allow colonization of each others system, then whoever gets a system first, is the only treaty member allowed to colonize that system at all.

And, imho, this is one of the greatest additions to SE! No more can your "allies" who have a different breathable atmosphere come into your systems and setup their own mini empires while taking away your future planets.

I never select #3 unless its absolutly necessary...

Oops again!

This is why I shouldn't answer questions at work when a) Typing in a very minimized window and b) Don't have the game handy to reference.

Anyhow I should correct myself while I have the chance. The first option (in all neutral systems) will prevent you from colonizing any system outside of the ones you already have claimed.

Grossly mislabelled

Thanks for the answer. So essentially the options mean:

1) "In neutral systems" --> No colonization outside the own, already colonized systems. No attack on the treaty partner outside own systems.

2) "In all systems" --> No colonization inside the partner`s systems. No attack on the treaty partner in any system.

3) "May colonize each other`s systems" --> No restriction to colonization. No attack on the treaty partner in any system.

If this understanding is correct, the teaty options are grossly mislabelled. Also, the "escalation" logic is not consistent. Colonization restrictions decrease from 1 to 3 while attack restrictions increase between 1 and 2. This should be changed IMHO.

Me no like this treaty element

Submitted by Thy Reaper on Sat, 2006-10-21 08:43.

I think non-aggression and colonization are very different concepts that should be in seperate treaty elements.

I like not allowing combat in nuetral systems, but that doesn't mean I want to restrict colonization at all.

As far as attack restrictions go, consider the difference between "we won't fire on your ships" and "oh, sure, place your ships inside my defence perimeter".

There are 10 types of people in the world:

Those that understand binary, and those that don't.
