Stuck at "Processing all players turns"

Steve Dallas's picture
Submitted by Steve Dallas on Thu, 2006-10-19 12:09. Space Empires V General

I have one save game that consistently hangs at this point. However I can't remember for sure if I had started it before the game got patched from 1.00 to 1.08. I think I had, but figured I'd try another game and see how it went.

The first game was on a large map with 14 other computer opponents.

I remade a game that is on a medium size map with 7 opponents. I toned down maximum units and ships thinking a smaller map and units might use less memory and/or lead to less problems.

However, I'm in year 2405.6 and it got stuck there again. I had a save game a couple of turns back I reverted to...and it moved on past that point ok.

I am, however, worried that this is a bug that needs to be fixed...and I'm not really even sure what could be causing it.

Has anyone else been experiencing this kind of behavior where sometimes it won't finish the end of turn processing, yet on a restart of the game, it will continue?

I have had this same issue, but only when I changed the size of the galaxy. Have you edited any of the core files of the game? Do you have a save game?

Submitted by Steve Dallas on Thu, 2006-10-19 12:53.

I have not touched any of the core files, or modded in any way. I wanted to try out the base game before trying the balance mod or anything else.

As far as a save-game, I have one in which it seems to be failing every time, however I'm also not 100% certain that the game was started as a 1.08 game...it -may- have been started before the patch got run.

It should say on the load screen

Submitted by stl pnthr on Thu, 2006-10-19 13:00.

The load screen says the version it was started as if you still have it listed. Also, sometimes using "sabotage planet/colony" and a few other intelligence options cfause the same lockup as that, so it could be the problem.

I'm not sure that's true about the load screen. I'm pretty sure I had another save game that was 1.00 that I continued after 1.08, and after saving it would say 1.08 when loading...so I think it converts it.

As far as the intelligence options, so far I've only used 100% defense, and not used any intelligence at all, so that wouldn't be it.

Could be going from 1.00 to 1.08

Submitted by stl pnthr on Thu, 2006-10-19 13:34.

could possibly be from going from version 1.00 to 1.08 in a single game. When I tried to load my version 1.00 game once I patched to 1.08 my game locked up. Not sure if it is meant to be integrated on the older saved games.

Yep...I realize

Submitted by Steve Dallas on Thu, 2006-10-19 13:50.

Yep...I realize that.

That's why I'm not sending in the one savegame file even though I was fairly far into the game.

Basically, with the new game (started post-patch)...I've had 3 times where it's stopped at the post turn processing though...so, something is up, even after the patch.

Where is happening specifically?

Submitted by Captain Kwok on Thu, 2006-10-19 14:15.

Is at a specific player number or does it happen during the processing at the end of turns?

I ended up being stuck with

Submitted by Chris_W on Thu, 2006-10-19 15:19.

I ended up being stuck with the same message today. Didnt use autosave and lost two hours of game time as a result. It was just stuck there, nothing happened. And no, it has nothing to do with specific player number, the message it gets stuck in is the very first one.

Amnd this error seems to happen to -alot- of players, there's already quite a few threads on it directly or indirectly.

Got the same problem today.

Submitted by Redbull102 on Thu, 2006-10-19 15:42.

Got the same problem today. As I save every turn, I had no problems to quit it and restart the game, went to the next turn without problems.

But I got today a second problem. Empire 2 took forever to finish the round.
First I though, maybe the second empire fights a lot, so it takes longer, stand up move out of the room, got a book, began to read in front of my pc.

But after 20 Pages I was still waiting for the second empire ( playing against 4 ki controlled empires ). So i used ctrl+alt+entf and killed the process it in the task manager. Happy I saved in that turn, restarted it, hit the end turn button, and same happened as before... tried it three times, then I opened my settings.txt and changed :

Space Combat Ends Only When Time Up Or No Enemies := TRUE

to

Space Combat Ends Only When Time Up Or No Enemies := FALSE

After that I restarted SEV, hit the turn thingy and it went through in less than 5 secs.

Hope that will help you too.
And remember, saving every round will help your nervs.

I have had this happen to me

Submitted by The Donktor on Sat, 2006-10-21 09:07.

I have had this happen to me in both the standard game and the balance mod. Happens in both somwhere around turn 40 or so during the "Processing all players turns" part.

Both of the games were started after the patch.

My settings.txt was already set to Space Combat Ends Only When Time Up Or No Enemies := FALSE.

I am not running any intelligence except defense.

I never changed the SIZE of the galaxy, but I did change the TYPE to spiral arm.

My PC specs are:

Abit AN8 Mobo
AMD64 3700+
2 gigs Corsair DDR 400
XFX Gforce 6800GS

I would be happy to attach Save files if that would help.

BTW, I was able to play the DEMO thru to 100 turns several time with NO problems at all. I know that they are seperate builds, but I guess any info may help solve the problem.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I tried a small map

Submitted by Iron Giant on Sat, 2006-10-21 12:21.

I have not yet had the problem playing on a Small Map.

I think something is not optimized for large and possibly medium maps.

I was playing an AWESOME game last night on a large map, got to the point where I had to End Task every single turn Sad

I'm now 10 hours into a game on a small map, not once has it hung with that end of turn screen...

Submitted by Steve Dallas on Sat, 2006-10-21 16:40.

Well, I just got to the point in this last game where it's pretty much unplayable from this point on.

Download my Savefiles

Those are ALL my savegames, and I will be mailing them to MM as well. The reason I posted them here is...I am curious if anyone gets the same issue when playing the Xanadu Small game.

Xanadu Small is the game I was on, and is right at the point where I cannot play any further.

Xanadu is the larger game that was having the same problem I mentioned about, but -may- have started as a 1.00 game.

The autosaves are there too. I had been experiencing the problem, but could end task on the game and continue some of those earlier save games...up until the point where Xanadu Small is.

And, before anyone comments on the game, I was playing with the AI on easy mainly to test out how the research worked in the later parts of the game, so I've pretty much set up a defensive perimeter and just focused on techl. In fact, I had just recently maxed research tech and was about to start focusing on crushing the enemy...obviously the game was over long ago, they just didn't know it yet. I also wanted to see if I'd get this same lockup, which I did.

I may try playing on small maps next...we'll see. I hope sending this to MM will help get this fixed, as I really do like the SE franchise...

For what its worth

Submitted by Phoenix-D on Sat, 2006-10-21 17:33.

I get the same problem with Xandu small.

EDIT: I went through the players under human control and the game crashes when you try to load the last empire in the list. Its a neutral, so I have a feeling it was creating during the game and maybe that's where the bug lies.

Yes, that empire WAS created

Submitted by Steve Dallas on Sat, 2006-10-21 20:23.

Yes, that empire WAS created later in the game...so that may be it...

It had been using that new empire for quite a few turns though (at least 2 years, I think)...

Along those lines then, is there a way to disable adding new empires once the game is in progress? I don't remember seeing anything like that in the game setup...

Doubt it

New empires are formed as a result of revolts and special events, dont' you can disable 'em.

How to avoid new empires

Submitted by Qcontinuum on Sun, 2006-10-22 01:48.

If (!) it still works as in SE IV and 20 players are the maximum in SE V as some posts indicate, you can avoid the creation of new empires during the game simply by starting the game with 20 empires.

Will a new empire be created if one of the original 20 dies off?

I found this out 211 turns

Submitted by Wrongshui on Sun, 2006-10-22 06:50.

I found this out 211 turns into a game. Ive started a new game, every empire has the emotionless trait so it should lower the chances of a new empire.
