Isen't worth it.

Submitted by Jorgas on Thu, 2006-10-19 08:37. Space Empires V General

This game just isen't worth the hours I've already wasted in it. On a state of the art computer, which can play games like doom3/farscape/and such with no issues at all. SE:V takes ages to change turns(atleast 60-90 seconds to finish the AI, then 30-45 seconds to finish the after player thing). And 20% of the time I'm not even lucky enought to be able to get to the next turn cause it freezes up when it's "finishing after the players", or whatever it says. Whenever I turn on autosave on 1 turn it fails 75% of the times to finish the finishing crap. And saving manualy takes atleast 60-90 seconds aswell, the times that the game lets you save, most of the time I just get an error message telling me that I can't save...

So yeah...
spending 2-3 minutes on every turn (more ofcourse when it's fights goin' and then waiting usualy 2 minutes for the AI to finish it's turns. That's lowly counted as 4.5 minutes a "full turn(with the AI doing it's as well)". Not being able to save, for several turns in a row, whenever the game decides that it wants to give you that error. So sometimes you've gotta spend 40-50 minutes to play a whole 10 turns, and then the game freezes when it's finishing up after the AI turns, and you can wait 5 minutes, 50 minutes, or 5 hours and nothing ever happens. And then we come to the best part of replying the last 10 turns, since it's impossible to auto-save, and the game itself decides when you can save manualy.

rant rant, b***h b***h, rant rant. I returned the game to the store today, and guess what! I was the third person that had called/visited the store and asked if they could return the game, cause it's not even freaking finished yet!
So yeah, I got my money back, and a month of WoW card free, and the assurance that if any of my friends had bought the game, and wanted to return it they'd be compensated as well.

In my line of business if we'd release a product that was defect/not finished people would die and we'd end up in jail, but eh, guess it'd alot different in gaming when you only scam people by letting them buy your beta-product aslong you call it V.1.00.

Have a nice life, I'm going back to GalCiv2.

You're line of business

Submitted by phalzyr on Thu, 2006-10-19 08:43.

You're line of business isn't programming. All games released for Pc are buggy, some more than others. (this one just above average IMO). I have no trouble myself saving, takes 1-2 seconds, so it must be a hardware configuration issue or such. did this happen for the demo also?

n/t

Submitted by Jorgas on Thu, 2006-10-19 08:59.

No the demo had no issues that bothered me, and actually we (I) do programming too, for heavy machinery used in industry, 1 bug and we can spend months on fixing it, costing hundreds of thousands of dollars before it's out on the market. I don't mind the small bugs one bit, and my other computer got the same "save" and "freeze" issue aswell. So I do doubt it's hardware issues on mybehalf, 'specialy since the clerk in the game store said that the other 2 people that returned the game aswell, had them.

I don't think your experience is universal

Submitted by RogerN on Thu, 2006-10-19 09:08.

I can only speak for myself, but I've played over 100 turns so far and...

1. I haven't had a single "freeze" like you described while processing turns.

2. I haven't had any issues with saved games. Saving takes a couple seconds at most, certainly not 60-90 seconds like you describe.

3. Autosave seems to work just fine; I've been using it for most of my games.

Sorry to hear that you're having such bad luck, but my own experience has been positive (especially after the patch). Oh, I should also note that I'm using the Balance Mod at the moment - I don't know if that would affect the stability problems you're having.

I should of said pc

Submitted by phalzyr on Thu, 2006-10-19 09:14.

I should of said pc programming Smiling You have limited hardware config to program for, not 100,000+. Pc programming is much more complex, and easier to miss bugs when fixing. Have you ever done PC software programming? Even with a million beta testers a bug will get through.

I do agree though that lately they been allowing less than complete games to be released, seems to becoming the norm rather than exception.

I agree with that.

I played the demo and it crashed a couple of times on me.
The saving and rest of stuff was fine. And I got to play my hundred turns. But it's definately not hardware causing all this trouble that seV is having.

Anyways, tomorrow I get my copy, and hopefully the patch makes sure I dont have to go through any form of hell to play this Smiling

PS: Good going on returning the game. Here they'd say no untill I sue.

I wasn't trying to say all of SEv's issues were do to hardware config issues. I was generalizing to the OP's general statement about pc programming should not have bugs at all since where he works doesn't allow it for his type of programming.

the two areas are two totally different beasts. I've done both btw.

A pc game is impossible for even a large team to develop bug free game with in the pc market now a days(i remember programming in the good old commodor 64 days when...eeek no i don't...), let alone MM a very small team Eye-wink. I've had games I couldn't even play before and makers not willing to even patch it, at least MM is fixing the mistakes, and hopefully does so until it is almost bug free.

Sorry to hear you can't return games where you are at.

I definately agree that MM is trying to fix it.
That is definately great, and why I know, eventually, it's inevitable that I will enjoy this game.

Yeah, here returning games is another game in itself.
But when I said that, I forgot I'm importing it Smiling (importing was same amount as the game)

This whole thing reminds me of Derick Smart, and Universal Combat. I also patiently followed the development of this game. When it realease, I immediately ordered. When I got it, I was very dissapointed. And then, after a year? I think, he stopped supporting the game saying it's "end of life". Man that stuff can still do with allot of work.

I doubt this will get to that though Smiling

I never had problems

Submitted by stl pnthr on Thu, 2006-10-19 10:18.

Aside from the large combat locking up the game game bug that was patched I never had any issues. The game and demo saved and loaded fine, with maybe 5 seconds to save/load and an average time-span for AI turns (3-5 seconds average, with a few longer for bigger empires)
Give it a few weeks and this game should be just about perfect...give it a few months and there'll be a dozen or so mods.

IMO The game seems to have more problems with certain systems then others. *shrugs*

Did you modify any of the game files? I only got this error message when I modified the game files for a mod.

Yep that called hardware config issues. The saving taking forever is one of those. It also seems to have more trouble on peoples systems that play it ALOT and use alot of its features Eye-wink I myself never have played with drones yet so thus never encountered any bugs there Laughing out loud

Yes some problems, but...

Submitted by Jerseyboy381 on Thu, 2006-10-19 11:09.

I don't think It's bad enough to return it. I've been pretty lucky so far, except the fleet ordinance bug. The one thing we know is MM will support the game and continue to support it for a while. SEIV is what? 6 years old now and the last patch was less then a year ago. Lets not forget that when SEIV released it was missing Drones and MM put them in later. They stand behind their work. Show me another developer that releases a patch after 6 years. I'm still waiting for the Starfleet Command 3 patch that was promised a few years back...Blizzard used a patch to destroy Diablo 2 by punishing all players because some were cheating. And as for Derick Smart, Universal Combat was just another build of his failed Battlecruiser series. A great Idea for a game that has never worked in I think we're up to 6 versions now. Should this game's release date have been pushed back? Probably, but MM did release a big fix on the release date (remember a lot of us got the game early...several weeks so for the aussies). Just give it some time and this will be a great game.

To be fair to the original

Submitted by Steve Dallas on Thu, 2006-10-19 12:25.

To be fair to the original poster, I've read about others having this problem as well.

I am also experiencing the same problem where it seems to lock up on post turn processing about 1 out of every 10-15 turns, so I save often and have to restart the game.

I have one save game that may be from a 1.00 start that is at a point where it fails every time I try to continue, however I'm tossing that one because there's a 10-20% chance I may have started the game before I got updated to the 1.08 patch.

I've played clean games since the 1.08 patch though and am getting the same problem the original poster has...except for the problem saving files.

I got my program though Steam, so it's happening with that as well as retail versions, it seems.
