Video Resolution problems

leprekawn's picture
Submitted by leprekawn on Tue, 2006-10-17 22:28. Space Empires V General

First, I formally apologize for any duplication this causes.

My system specifications are noted below for the curious.

I'm having a problem with the video display options. For one, I run a Dell Flatpanel monitor. Something like 20.1" Widescreen. Native Resolution 1680x1050.

The game appears to support this resolution in the configuration, but when I set for said settings, the game starts in Windowed mode, but sorta behaves like it's in fullscreen (mousing off the edge makes the map spin or move).

Also, the Bottom three buttons in the configuration don't 'do' anything. I can set primary device, resolution and Render settings, but nothing else responds normally.
I purchased the game off of Steam and am currently up to date at 1.08.

Any information or assistance anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried setting video memory to "safe"?

Video Memory Usage, Graphic

Submitted by leprekawn on Tue, 2006-10-17 23:15.

Video Memory Usage, Graphic Detail and Background Detail buttons don't do anything when I click them.
So no, i hadn't tried that. But if you can tell me how to make them move, I'd be more than happy to. ;]

I'm having some video releated problems also

Submitted by evmiller on Wed, 2006-10-18 17:00.

I have a standard 21" CRT monitor and the 1280 x 960 resolution isn't being displayed correctly. The image is stretched out to much vertically and scrunched in horizontally. This resolution displayed properly in the demo and is kind of annoying because the 1024 x 768 resolution is too big, but 1600 x 1200 is a little too small to read allot of the text. the 1280 x 960 is right in the middle and was perfect on the Demo. Hopefully someone reported this.

Fixed my problem. My friendly computer did -not- have what we would call "current" video drivers. Presto. Problems fixed. At least, video problems fixed.

"Primary Display" = crippled, "Radeon X1950..." = windowed only

I have a similar problem. What video card & driver version do you have?

My hardware:
-Core 2 Duo 3.33GHz
-Dual ATI Radeon X1950XTX in CrossFire mode, Catalyst 6.9/video driver 8.282.0.0
-DVI LCD 1680x1050
-Fresh xp Pro install, DirectX 9.0c, other DX8/9 games work flawlessly

My problem:
-Running "Primary Display" @ 1680x1050x32 yields only 9 FPS and doesn't look all that spectacular (can see gradient around sun, for example)
-Lowering all settings @ 1280x800x16 still sucks at ~30 FPS

-Selecting "Radeon X1950..." @ 1680x1050x32 runs in a window @ 1024x768x32 at 330 FPS
-SEV GUI works fine and stores settings in registry

I tried:
-Another nearly-identical system
-"Safe" and "auto"
-With & without T&L
-DirectX 9c setup from SEV install

This game looks great (A contemporary, robust MOO2? That's what I'm looking for.) except 1024x768 is too tiny and the game crashes whenever its window loses focus.

Disable CrossFire mode

Submitted by Rolo on Sun, 2006-10-29 13:49.

Kwok's mentioning disabling SLI in another thread prompted me to disable CrossFire mode.

It worked! Setting "Primary Display" worked @ 1680x1050 fullscreen with full 60 FPS (DVI refresh rate is locked at 60Hz).

This is a workaround, however, not a fix, since disabling/re-enabling CrossFire is pretty inconvenient.

Try 1280X1024 instead of 1280X960

Was there an option for 1280 x 1024 resolution? That's what I've had to use on some of the monitors in my lab to get them to display properly through projector systems...

FWIW, I usually use the 1600 x 1200 on my 21" flat-panel monitor, and it reads fine; of course, I use that for normal applications (at work) as well, so I'm used to the tiny text. My wife thinks I'm crazy for doing that, so our (shared) home computer is set to 1024 x 768 (which I agree is NOT useful for SEV - the buttons take up too much of the screen).
