A huge swarm of fighter-bombers is difficult to defend against. Can you "program" fighters to selectively choose shoot other fighters? Otherwise your fighters only make one pass through the swarm of fighter bombers before rushing off to shoot at the capital ships.

Yeah, when you create a unit there's a button to set the unit's default battle plan. What the battle plans actually do is under empire options. You can set one of the plans to have Fighters as it's top targetting priority. Then you can set your fighters so that they automatically use that plan.
