Apostrophes

Submitted by Brad on Tue, 2006-10-17 17:17. Bug Reports

Not a bug, just a pet peeve.

Just because a word ends in the letter S doesn't mean it requires an apostrophe. For example: "Two Fighters Constructed." Note the lack of apostrophe - this means that there is more than one fighter. An apostrophe in this situation denotes ownership. The message "Two Fighter's Constructed" makes no sense.

I know this is an old

Submitted by Arnir on Fri, 2007-01-05 16:40.

I know this is an old thread, but I would really like to see this addressed in a patch. As a teacher, I wince everytime I see the mistake.

Generic message

Submitted by Phoenix-D on Fri, 2007-01-05 17:00.

The message is generic, so you're going to end up with a grammar oddity sometime, no matter what.

Either Two Fighter's Constructed or Two Type Ss constructed.

Yes, the grammar in the game

Submitted by jeep on Fri, 2007-01-05 18:48.

Yes, the grammar in the game makes me cringe, as does most grammar on the internet.

Apostrophes do NOT pluralize. It could say "# Fighter Units constructed"

Another thing is the inconsistent way in which ability enhancements are described (e.g. "resource gathering decreased by -5%") This double negative logically would mean that resource gathering is increased, but we know that's not the case.

A better way of saying this could be to replace "increased" and "decreased" with "modified" (e.g. "decreased by -5%" becomes "modified by -5%", which is much more logical)

These are not game-killers, but still annoying when you notice them.

Apostrophe still doesn't make sense.

Submitted by Arnir on Fri, 2007-01-05 20:12.

There are ways to avoid the problem as jeep said. An apostrophe never pluralizes a word and it just strikes me as sloppy. With how often the game crashes there are bigger issues for them to deal with but it just strikes me as not caring about the product.

I also second changing how modifiers are presented. It could be clearer.

Gramar Pedantry

Submitted by evilginger on Fri, 2007-01-05 20:21.

This is a fun game to play but really nothing to get wound up about it’s in the nature of any game (or application) which uses blocks of preset text that you get grammatical errors in relation to singular and plural. English being such a grammatically confused language with a high degree of irregular forms also doesn’t help.

By way of example we have
Children (plural child (singular)
Deer (singular and plural)
Dice (plural) die (singular)
Mice (plural) mouse (singular)

Then we have Latin plurals and English words which look like Latin forms lime referendum
Tautologies like Secret Ballot since ballot is a secret vote and does no need the adjective

Then there are the grammatical differences between US and UK usage to add even more to the fun.

To be honest we should give up on English and start using something sensible like Sanskrit or Palavi

To continue with the pedantry

The correct form would be “resource gatheringis decreased by -5%” and it’s not a double negative
The use of the Apostrophe is a declining and two generally in this position indicative of a contraction or of the possessive case

Submitted by Jagzeplin on Fri, 2007-01-05 21:27.

Did this ages ago

See thread http://www.spaceempires5.com/en-US/node/1672

Note: This was done with an old version. I don't know if MainStrings.txt has been changed in any patch since then. Use at your own risk (or just open the current MainStrings.txt in any text editor and search for the character ').

This isn't the first time i've seen that exact same question asked...

And while I'm too lazy to go dig up the other examples, I believe they were done by you and almost as OT. Just open a thread (a single thread) about the question, don't spam it over 3/4s of the forum!

Differen't sub forums, yes. Same general forum though.

And it doesn't help that you posted it in several places where it had no relationship to the thread in question.
