Migrating SV5 to another PC

Submitted by Bones on Sun, 2008-07-06 21:10. Space Empires V FAQs

Hi,

I am upgrading at present and want to move my SV5 saved games and updates to another PC. 2 Questions:

Firstly, the new PC is 64bit CPU and OS (vista ultimate) - any issues with SV5?

Secondly, can I install the stock game on the new PC then overwrite the directory with the SV5 data from my old PC.

Cheers

I found with Vista that there's a security feature that queries every time you want to save something. There is no mechanism for it to work in SEV, so it can't save turns unless you turn the feature off. That's as far as I know.

I don't know about copying over a fresh install but I just copied my old install onto the new computer. Due to a new registry or something it will ask you for your security code again.

You can copy over installs of SE5 just fine. All that will be required is typing in the CD key again. You don't even need to bother making any sort of actual installation; simply copy from the old HDD to the new, run, type CD key, and you're done.

Make sure to install SE5 outside of Program Files in Vista, to avoid UAC issues. SE5 violates the basic rules of program behavior established in Win2k (probably even NT), and doesn't save user data into user folders. Thus, it is caught in the driftnet with Vista, which actually seeks to enforce the rules.

Also be aware that frame rates will be less than expected. Vista does not have any real DX8 support (used by SE5), and emulates the functions. This tends to result in worse performance.

Thanks Randallw and Fyron for your replies.

Thats a bit disapointing about the performance, the main reason I upgraded was to increase the speed of the turn times. I get frustrated when I get to the interesting part of the Game and the turn times get over a munite or so. I'm already running Vista 32bit Ultimate, so I should still see some benefits as I'm going from a P4 3Ghz to a core2duo 3Ghz 64bit Ultimate. Already brought the bits so we'll see very shortly. Again thanks for the info.

Cheers

So, Fyron, are you saying if I move my space empires directory out of Program files I can leave UAC on? I'd feel a bit better if I could do that.

Just install Win XP and enjoy your 'dual core'
SE5 do not like Vista at all

"at all" is quite the exaggeration..

Well thanks for telling me how to keep UAC on. It works fine now. I was always a bit uneasy having it off.

I built a system designed to run Vista well and put XP on it anyway. I really like the performance boost.

I don't install SE5 in Progfiles either. Just thought it was a better idea to us C:\games\SEV. Hate all that long filename baggage.

Yeah that IS annoying. Smiling The path to the settings.txt file for the mods I've been playing is about 200 chars.

Food for thought..

Did a quick Goggle search on the possibility of a duel boot Vista and XP. Didn't get a chance for an indepth read but it seems like a possibility. Couldn't confirm whether Vista 64bit and XP 32bit would be a goer, but I intent to give it a crack. Will let you know the outcome - once I finally get my PC up and running - what a saga thats been!

Not sure how well the windows boot loader handles it all though, never had to use that one. What's the one people use to "twin" (Eg boot osx and XP simultaniously) boot with? Is it Xine or something?

The NT boot loader handles multi-booting Windows OSes flawlessly. It doesn't support other OSes, though. Grub is the boot loader of choice when mutli-booting Windows and *nix.

Xine is a *nix multimedia playback engine. "Boot Camp" is the poorly named boot loader provided by Apple for installing Windows on Intel Macs. If you mean running Windows in a virtual machine on Mac OS X (you can't actually run two OSes natively at the same time on the same machine), you are thinking of Parallels.

There is a good (seems so anyway) guide to duel boot Vista and XP..

http://apcmag.com/how_to_dual_boot_vista_and_xp_with_vista_installed_first__the_stepbystep_guide.htm

Attempted to set-up a duel boot system on the weekend - failed. The instructions seem clear but when I repaired Vista's boot loader and rebooted I ended up with Vista failing to load. So, re-installed Vista from scratch. As it turned out it was the best thing I could have done.

The reason for the duel boot requirement was the really doggy frame rate with SE5 on Vista. I had Vista on the old PC and it was still playable, but the new system was terrible.

After the re-install I didn't load the Samsung 64 bit drivers for the monitor and SV5 is playable again. So, I can only assume that it was a driver problem causing the poor frame rate, rather than the OS. Again this may be the reason others are having problems with SE5 on Vista.

Emulated DX8 layer is the primary cause of low framerates in Vista. Buggy or unsupported drivers can certainly make it worse, but DX8 provides a ceiling.

XD I think its SEV...

As for Vista

Vista is awesome. Do not deny it. I was worried about getting it
(64 bit) and every single thing works fine. As for expecting it to run better on a dual core... good luck! Im using a Quad Core and it doesnt run much better than on my Pentium 4, besides the better inturn loading and getting rid of some glitches with the help of my new Nvidia 9300 GFX card compared to my old 6600
