seeking advice: combat bug

Submitted by Dogboy on Sun, 2008-07-06 14:44. Space Empires V General

I am hosting SEV on PBW, v1.74 + Balance Mod v1.14b. My unarmed scout entered a wormhole. On the other side were my opponent's fighters. I received a combat report, but it would not load. And, all fighters were killed! My scout went on its merry way without a scratch. Is there any conceivable explanation for this? If not, then is there anything I can do, as host, to address this? Can I re-run the turn on PBW? What, in general, is the best policy for dealing with bugs? I hate to re-run turns, and even if I do, this may not cure the problem. But, if I were the other player, I would be very frustrated to be the victim of this bug. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, DB

they can flee as well.. for example 'anti-figter' fighters can't hurt ships, so they decided to flee... your scout think the same, but fighters is much faster... so they flee first... battle ended and you scout called 'survivor' in the short log message. If you click 'details' you will see which vehicle is destroyed and which just flee.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, the combat detail report shows every last fighter destroyed. I can't fathom that.

It's strange, because I have a game with the same setup as you. 20 of my enemy's fighters attacked me. I lost 30 fighters for his loss of 7. The replay doesn't work (I get another empire's) and I can't imagine how I could have lost so much. The fighters are at worst equal. As far as I can determine I should have wiped him out with minor losses.

I gave you an answer at Intel. Basically if the enemy is spread out and attacks individually, each fighter can't cause enough damage before your organic armour regenerates before the next attack.

I believe these fighters were destroyed because their supplies were depleted for some reason. I had a similar situation when my fighters, having tanks almost full the previous turn, started fighting in the next one without any supplies. There was no problem with seeing the combat so perhaps it is a different bug. In my case I suspect a savegame issue as in this turn I tried to see if the savegame build queue bug is corrected and saved/loaded in the middle of the turn. Perhaps it affected somehow supply levels. It happened to me only twice and both times I saved/loaded during a turn. So, my suggestion is to re-do the turn without saving/loading in case of your opponent and see if that works. I am very interested in hearing what the results are.
