Please forgive me if this was discussed already, but I was not able to find such topic, and I am not really a regular on this forum yet. I have seen one thread that was talking about corrupted saves being inaccessible, but this is not necessarily what is happening in my case.
I love the game, have been around since SE3, loved SE4, and have to say that after initial dislike of the real-time combat in SE5 i embraced it with my whole heart. Being lucky enough to find BalanceMod, I am enjoying a second wave of SE5 goodness for the last month or two. However, this is my second game that is is "threatened" with the error I am experiencing.
I play 1.71 with BalanceMod (I think that the error still happens with "Stock"), and every now and then, usually toward the end of the game (I am racing toward Sphere Worlds, and have most of the Tech maxed out), I get the error message each turn that the auto-save was not able to save my progress. I can try to save the game manually, but the same error comes up, whether I try to save over and older game, or create a new save. Here is more or less how that error message looks:
ERROR: Unable to save game "C:\Program Files\Strategy First\space empires
V\SAVEGAME\AUTOSAVE4.GAME".
I am using Windows XP from under Admin account, same which installed the game. I checked the folder permissions where games are saved, as well as hard drive space. I also turned off the auto-save after I got that error and tried to save manually with no luck. The game plays after the error appears, but sometimes it hangs during processing of one of the player's turn... It seems that it usually starts with save number 1, as I can see that the previous 10 autosaves are there (checking the time stamp)...
I know that the recent patch (1.74) has something in it regarding "corrupted large save games", but I would love to actually finish this game since I have put so much time into it already. Any help or suggestions from someone who conquered this problem would be really appreciated!

There's no reason why you can't update your game to SE5 v1.74. Just be sure to update to BM v1.14b to keep the AI up to date.

The corrupt save game is due to an error in the data saving end, so it wouldn't matter what the path was - it would still fail. I'd try the patch.

I am having exactly the same problem, with BM and v. 1.71.
I had to stop two very interesting games because around turn 70 the game would not save anymore. Once or twice I could save a game if I restarted the game after I saved, so that I would not finish a turn more than once without leaving the game and entering again, but later it would not work anymore.
I have not checked if it happens in 1.74.
