Ok, so I had a change of heart

Submitted by Wink on Sat, 2006-09-23 01:09. Space Empires V General

On the Strategy First forums, I sorta dogged the demo some.

I still have some flaws I am experiencing, such as Exception errors at bad times.. but doing an auto-save each turn lessens the impact.

A Lot of the interface niggles, arent as bad once you get used to them, not that I would say I LOVE them yet, but they are easier to bear now.

Carriers OWN ALL!!!!! My last few games, all research early has been directly into getting fighters and a light carrier.. load em up and go hunting! nothing can stand in their way early game.

Gotta say I wasnt sure what to expect from SEV.. and I was dissapointed at first, but after getting to gnaw on the meat some, I think I am going to be one happy camper!

Switched back to SEIV for a few earlier.. and having to go back to that resolution was a shock! Thank you 1920X1200!!!!

So, I would say I am begging to like SEV a whole lot, the errors, exceptions and crashes can be fixed.. some of the UI will be fixed.. the AI needs some work. But damn fi I am not starting to really have some fun with this. I was trying to play it and treat it like SEIV (Upgrade) and it is.. but it isnt, so I changed my mind set to this being a NEW game, and it helped a lot.

Robert

Oh, I like it...

Submitted by Ressev on Sat, 2006-09-23 01:22.

But some things are still quite annoying and I hope they are addressed.

*The combat limit set to 5 seconds should be re-thought to 120.
*A summarize function needs to be added.
*Help should also give the option to display previous techs in a chain so that you can compare how far you have come.
*Make the flags over planets and ships smaller, another box next to the other boxes, or pop-up on mouseover.

I must say I really do enjoy the improvements graphics wise. But the wonky time limit on combat is killing the newness for me and the mysterious loss of trops when dropped on de-poppulated planets is annoying.

The timer on combat isn't

Submitted by Wink on Sat, 2006-09-23 01:26.

The timer on combat isn't hard set I dont believe.

My experience is this..

- If the pursuer has no chance to catch the prey.. it send on a timer.
- if the pursuer has a chance to catch up , the game lets it run.
I am not a beta tester or anything, just a n00b.. but it seems to work that way for me.

I agree on the flags thing. Also, REDUCE THE FONT SIZE OF THE DAMN LABELS ON THE MAP!! I turn on names for the system map.. big help really.. but each name is so huge it overwhelms everything else.

The limit isn't hard set,

Submitted by MageKing17 on Sat, 2006-09-23 11:24.

The limit isn't hard set, but have you ever tried to attack a planet and had the population die before the structures?

And the pursuit thing is only partly that way. If the ship has a chance to catch up, but is far enough away, the battle will end prematurely. This I actually like, although I would also like the fleeing ship to not remain in that hex.

If the pursuing ship is just the right distance away, it can get so close that it is almost within range to fire before the battle suddenly ends. This is a problem. A big one.

How do you get this resolution? The highest in the setup screen is 1280 X 1024. Is that a mod?

Also, what is the benefit of not using 1024 X 768? When I switch it just shrinks everything down. The windows are smaller leaving empty space around. The text is smaller to read.

Higher resolution displays more system!

Submitted by Captain Kwok on Sat, 2006-09-23 14:12.

Higher resolutions allow you to display more of the system at once.

The setup will display all the valid video modes for your computer IIRC.

yeah.. it's an available option for me

I have a widescreen aspect mnitor.. so some of the wide screen display options may not be available to non wide srceen users.

It surely does

Submitted by Captain Kwok on Sat, 2006-09-23 15:15.

Of course it is a benefit. You don't need to scroll around nearly as much with the system map - either in skewed view or top-down.

Even higher resolutions will allow you to zoom in somewhat on the system and have a more detailed view of the whole system.

And the list screens are

Submitted by Fyron on Sat, 2006-09-23 16:35.

And the list screens are bigger. A lot bigger. I find it nerve-raking to play on anything less than 1600x1200. Smiling

I use 1280x1024... but

Submitted by MageKing17 on Sat, 2006-09-23 17:57.

I use 1280x1024... but considering that I play a lot of games with low resolutions (still play Freespace 2 in 640x480. Pixelation, baby!), that's quite high for me.

Also when you start a new game just the warp points are labled, but if you change the name display, your choices are labels on or off, i think you should be able to choose which labels you want, if you just want warp points, or warp points and ships for example

I like the scaling.

It is a huge benefit in my opinion. I like things being a tad smaller as the UI appears less cluttered. Let alone the greater amount of system displayed.

I usually use between

Submitted by LordHavoc on Sun, 2006-09-24 06:53.

I usually use between 800*600 and 1024*768 for my gaming. Quite frankly, when the entire screen is moving at 60fps my brain couldn't physically process any pixilation anyway.

You can set which names (i.e. planet names and warp point names only) are displayed in the Empire Options. Unfortunately, if you click the "Names On/Names Off" button, it forgets the custom settings you configured in the Options.

I think that no more that 20 seconds...NO MORE!!!

5 seconds works quite well actualy. Forget what I just said, leave it at 5!
