SEIV and Linux (via Wine) Woes

Submitted by plinydogg on Wed, 2008-06-18 09:28. Space Empires IV General

I am attempting to run SEIV on Linux through Wine, a program that allows one to run Windows games on Linux machines.

The demo worked great, but I purchased the registered version via Strategy First yesterday and the game won't run because the Internet-based registration system doesn't work.

Whenever I try to run the game (se4.exe) I get an error saying "error while unpacking program, code C. Please report to author."

I attempted to get around this problem by booting into Windows and installing it there. I did this without incident (i.e., the Internet-based registration worked seamlessly) and then copied the Windows game directory over to Linux and attempted to run it. This didn't work either.

Does anyone know if there is a way to register the game that doesn't require the Internet? I really want to play this game but use Linux as my primary OS. I can supply my proof of purchase to prove that I'm not a pirate.

Here's the response I got to my email submission:

"Hello,

You will need to run the game with a Windows OS.

Regards,

Strategy First Technical Support"

Thanks for the completely useless response, Strategy First.

Purchasing the game on disk requires no internet registration...

Really? Fantastic. I'll order the disk instead.

I am astonished that it works through just Wine, given that it uses Direct3D. Don't you need Cedega as well?

(edit) Oh, you are talking about SE *4*, which is 2D. Nevermind.

Problem solved. Here's how:

(1) Find the folder you installed the game in;
(2) Open the "settings.txt" file found in the /data/ subdirectory;
(3) Change "Allow CD Music" to "FALSE";
(4) Save and you're good to go!
