Problem with DevNull's SEV editor

Submitted by jdphenix on Sun, 2008-05-18 00:12. SE:V MODs

First, I'd like to thank Devnull for creating this program. I remember using it in the past and it was a great tool to play around with the various parts of SE:V.

Unfortunately, I'm having a bit of a problem with it right now. Using the latest release of the editor, I recieve the following error message:

Error!
Could not find Space Empires V install directory!

OS: Vista Home Premium
CPU:Athlon 64 X2 4000+
RAM:2 GB 800 Mhz
GPU:GeForce 8600 GT (1GB, PCI-e)

I've tried various releases of the editor, back to 1.4.0, with no avail.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The editor looks in the registry to find the SEV home dir. If you are using a version of SEV that is too old (i.e. 1.17 or before, I believe), then the registry location path changed. The editor isn't compatible with such old versions of SEV in any case, honestly. The other problem I can think of that would cause this is if you've just installed the game but haven't actually run it yet since the registry settings don't get created until the first time you run the game (going past the initial pop-up and actually to the main menu screen, that is).

The specific registry key the editor is looking for, by the way, is:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Malfador Machinations\Space Empires V\Install Directory

In 1024x768, you can't see the Refresh and Visualise buttons in Weapons Comparison. And you can't resize the window to see them.

Does the editor not present the user with a dialog to locate SEV manually if the registry key is bogus/missing?

Idk what you; are talking about, if what i said then no, you cannot even get the editor splash screen up as the moment you double click you recieve an error if u have moved it from the original spot.

Also, remember when using it that the program is insanely picky... Your exe file MUST be called exactly se5.exe or the directory will not be found and it will say that it is invalid exe file because of wrong name.

1) If you move the se5 directory, just run the game from the new location and the registry key should update itself. Then you can run the editor.
2) Why would you rename the se5.exe? Don't do that, you silly person.
3) The program is "insanely picky" for a reason. It needs to have enough information to find the se5 files. If it can't find the base directory, it can't know where the files are that it needs to edit. This is not "insanely picky" so much as just needing certain things available in order to work. If you don't like these requirements, I invite you to use notepad.exe to do your modding Smiling

lol i did a lot of the halo mod with notepad!!!!! The really great thing about this editor is seeing the pictures whenyou put them on and all hte little stuff like not aving to add requirement numbers etc.

ONE MAJOR PROBLEM: is that there is no Ship Size editor, i think this should be added in for big mods espectialy cause its a pain to be switching between notepad and editor constantly and then wondering if its saved in the right place etc.

That was next on the "todo" list...but, of course, we all know what happens to those. I agree, it is a pain, which is one reason why you don't see many vehicle size changes in DevnullMod Smiling

SoS!

I've been using editor version 1.3.0.0 without any problems however I am having issues updating the editor to a newer version, the only way I managed to update it (some) is to download ALL patches (rather annoying and time consuming) and install them one after another till I reached version 1.4.3 However versions 1.5.0 and above simply won't start, I tried it several times, uninstalled it, redownloaded it etc etc and each time with the same result. At best windows xp provides me with an report to send to microsoft about the crash that occured :S Its a great mod but I'd hate having to downgrade my SEV again (using 1.71 atm) to make it work *pouts*

(in short: any download till 1.4.3 works perfectly, any above that version wont work at all)

any clue why / what causes this issue?

Hmmm, no I don't have any idea why that would happen...except that the versions on the server are not patches. They are complete versions, so "upgrading" is not a matter of unzipping the files into the old directory, but rather, you should uninstall the editor altogether (just delete the editor directory), download the latest version, and install from scratch (using the provided installer).

Dunno what to tell you then - something is different about your machine's configuration from what the editor is looking for. Without knowing more about the problem, what error it's getting, and how your machine is configured, there's not a lot more I can tell you.

I use Notepad++ to make my Mod and it works great. I made a Highlighter for it a while ago, the link is below.

You need to have .Net 2.0 or better installed. You can get it through Windows Update.

That thread is over 5 pages long - could you be more specific? COuld you provide error messages, or even better, the tech tree file you're using so that I can test it locally?

I think the problem is specific to the size of the tech file. 1.7 MB. Smiling
