What's Up With PBW.CC?

Submitted by Vince278 on Mon, 2008-04-21 16:18. Space Empires V General

I'm playing in my first PBW game and I've noticed the website has gone down several times already at irregular intervals. Is there a problem? Is this normal? This can wreak havoc with timed turn intervals. Smiling

The site goes down some times. No reason for worrying. Remember, the admins are doing this in their free time. Eye-wink
I think the site automaticaly delays any turns which have run when the server was down, or at least everytime I was in a game, when the server was down and the turn should have been run when it was on again, I was able to do the turn later...

They definitely deserve a hero's medal not only for doing it but for doing it for so long. Smiling

Geoschmo keeps the server in his garage, and occasionally it goes down and he has to give it a boot. Also occasionally the address slips but you can still sometimes get it at the IP.

strangely I just pinged it and ran a tracert and it timed out, even though it's working.

I've noticed that it is no longer able to retrieve certain images like race and ship pictures since a couple of days. Not really a problem, but I think it may keep too many connections open for as long as it is trying to retrieve these, possibly causing issues with all available connections on the web server being gobbled up.

PBW recently switched ISPs, and (as far as I understand it) the new one uses dynamic DNS, which means the IP number is going to change more frequently than it used to.

should get you to the site regardless of what the current IP number is.

At work we block such things as ping, tracert, and telnet to increase network security. Smiling

Well it used to work. I guess the new hosts don't allow such things. Added security is good I guess, I learnt Dos commands more than 10 years ago.
