What's taking so long on the next patch? Any word yet?

Submitted by Dizzy on Sun, 2008-04-20 12:43. Space Empires V General

I still read there are a few major issues left and this game isnt quite finished. So what's going on and what are the current show stoppers and when's the patch coming out that will fix em?

Well one show stopper is the annoying Random Crash to Desktop when looking at the comparison screen. . Give Aaron Time, He is just one guy coding away. . Patch ea When Aaron gets to it.

Non bugs - - Well if you don't count us bugging Aaron to implement them.
The Get-Vehicle Tonnage Formula to work in components
Allow Modifies Shield to work in Mounts
and some other stuff that we keep asking for. .

I consider the bug where you can't replay the combat in multiplayer pretty frickin important. It makes multiplayer much less enjoyable.

StellarRat, when does this happen, and how often? I've only seen a similar issue when PBW files don't have the combat logs zipped in, which usually only happens in large games when the file sizes get prohibitive. I have generally considered it to be outside of SEV's control (unless you want to assume that file sizes are too big due to inefficiency).

Have I missed something?

The combat replay files are so big because of accuracy, not so much inefficiency.. Remember, the logs are some sort of recording, not just random seeds. I think we convinced him to at least zip them before the encryption stage, at least..

Fighters aren't broken at all, it's point defense that's broken, though in stock fighters are over powered but that's just a balance issue and is dealt with in mods

There's a 1.71 bug with fighters only being launched once per game turn.

The problem is that it's being applied to launches in combat. If you could launch fighters in combat regardless of if they've been launch that turn, this problem would go away.

Do any of the beta test crew know of new patches being in the works? With only one released patch this year the tempo has indeed slowed down quite a bit, but some of these bugs are real game killers (i.e. compare screen crash) and need a fix badly.

Re: What's taking so long on the next patch? Any word yet?

It's pretty straight forward. We play a turn in multiplayer (TCP/IP not PBEM) with a battle. I'm hosting, once we've both received the turn files, I can replay any combat I've been in, he cannot. He gets an exception error when he tries to do the replay, something to effect of "unable to open file". This happens everytime he tries. Luckily the game continues to run for him even after the error. When he plays the game solo he does not have the problem. So, there is something wrong with the file he is receiving from me (I think), but only when it is used on his computer. It is worth noting that I'm running the Steam version and he is running the one from disk. But, everything else in multiplayer works fine for us.

Once-per-turn is a balancing feature. Being able to do ANYTHING you wanted with fighters was part of the balance issues they had. Having to carefully choose what to do with fighters reduces the brokenness considerably. Should you have to choose between attacking and defending with them? Maybe, it doesn't sound bad to me.

I disagree. This bug makes carriers a lot less useful than they should be. To me it's like saying that any normal ship only gets to fight once during its turn. That's just rubbish, since you can be attacked 10 times over in a single turn.

The solution needs to be that the fighters don't get their movement points returned just for docking and relaunching. Problem solved. No need to introduce the 'only one launch per turn' thing, which limits game options and is generally just stupid.

Fix mothballing : ). I mean the unmothball function. Have something like 50 ships of 200 mothballed and want to return them to action, but can't. It seems the script for unmothballing never get's called or something, because I can't get any ship to unmothball, not the "some do, some don't" that others are getting here.

Eh? They are different people, one the game dev, the other simply a modder and beta tester, unable to fix such hard-coded issues..

Not really. The way I see it carriers shouldn't be fighting battles directly unless they get caught unawares. They will launch their fighters from 15+ hexes away if possible.

Carriers should carry fighters into combat themselves, alongside the warships... Launching the fighters into space and having them move under their own power (esp. 15 hexes!) wastes massive amounts of supplies.

Hi!

I liked the carrier and fighters before the patch now I don't use them: a lot of money and work, and they are not so effective then before.

Else I've got a very serious problem: the program can't load some saves even autosaves. If its some bug its not funny... I've lost 4 games that I've played for 4 days each.

So I would appreciate a patch in some time.

The mothballing is more important to me than the fighter issue. Cannot unmothball anything. It's very frustrating. Fortunately I only mothballed some base space yards, but they would be handy now that I can afford their maintenance costs.

Everything that has transpired has done so according to my design...

Hmm, I think mothballing requires a space yard present. Did you by any chance mothball all the space yards in that sector of space? You might try unmothballing again after getting a shipyard ship there.

It is impossible to un-mothball any ships. I had a shipyard on the planet. The first time I tried, I was charged the resources, (my resources went down). When I went back to use those ships, they were still mothballed. When I tried to unmothball them a 2nd time, I was NOT charged resources.

well I think fighters should ba able to be launch more than once on a carrier.even in wwII Fighters were launch, recovered, refuled, then launched again. Modern Carriers today can launch and recover at the same time.weshould be able to launch in groups not just one launch and that it

I don't think you understand why the launch thing was changed. What was happening was that people launching and recovering like a relay race across the universe. Ferrying their fighters impossible distances in one turn by jumping from carrier to carrier. At least that is my understanding (I could be totally wrong since I never used this exploit.) Even in WW II you couldn't send a fighter from Japan to Europe and back in one battle. Obviously, the real solution is to limit the distance a fighter can move in one turn somehow not limit them to one launch per turn.

Hey

Is there anyone who knows a likely release date for the next patch ? I'm looking to start a new PBW game in the next 2-4 weeks and wanted to start off with the latest version of both BM (1.15) and the SEV patch.....

Thanks

I agree with Stellerat
What can be done is have fighters in groups so you can launch one group(or two..) at a battle or what you can do is hold groups for defence of carriers .what use to happen before the patch was all fighters where lanuch in every battle. If you put fightres in flight squadrens you could have one or 50 ...
carriers become a homebase for the squads

Maybe a limit on number of fighters in battle? Perhaps equal to the number of fighter bays? Obviously this wouldn't apply to planets. for planets you could make the max number a function of the population.
