SystemNames.txt

Submitted by SpaceBob on Mon, 2006-10-16 19:38. Space Empires V General

SystemNames.txt only contains ~100 names, so if you increase the max number of systems above that, you get a bunch of blank system names... Anyone know of/have a good place I could steal some star system names from and paste in rather than having to make up another 150 or so on my own?

Here ya go thousands and thousands of system names.

I took that from my SEIV mod Invasion! which might be from FQM Deluxe.

Settings.txt file this:

Maximum Number Of Systems: Number of Systems the galaxy can contain. The maximum value for this setting is 255.

Which makes sense as it would be a hard coded variable causing the limitation, no? Anyways, you won't wan't to set the systems over that otherwise things may go poof.

Odd.

Submitted by Phoenix-D on Mon, 2006-10-16 21:01.

Not sure why it would do that. Anyway, here's the default systemnames file. Just copy/paste the following list into a blank text file, name it that, and put it into your Data directory. Make sure the first name is at the very top of the file- no white space!

You missed the first rule..

Rule Two

For SE, at least, always do all modding in mod folders -- copy and paste the relevent folders into the mod folder.

There are 10 types of people in the world:

Those that understand binary, and those that don't.

Alright the problem is due

Submitted by Combat Wombat on Mon, 2006-10-16 21:27.

Alright the problem is due to SE5 not liking some of the characters se4 was fine with, I will try to get a corrected file up if it doesnt involve to much work.

Edit: I am sorry about the confusion but I didn't think for a second it would not work. Working on finding a better version that will work.

Seems that way big

Submitted by Grumble314 on Mon, 2006-10-16 21:30.

Seems that way big difference betwen a 2k file to parse and a 508k file. Wonder what the limit is with SEV now?

Here's a dumb question...

Submitted by Kahn on Mon, 2006-10-16 22:17.

Are you using Notepad or are you using Wordpad to edit the file? Wordpad is a Rich Text Editor, which in plane English means it will embed control characters in your text that will screw-up any plain text reader (which includes the SE5 engine). From your comments it sounds like you are either using Wordpad with formatting, or you've got some weird special characters your trying to use.

I've already hacked my star names, replacing them with common star names. Works fine. And as Baoghal already mentioned, always make a backup first!

Sincerely,
Kahn

Alright after some work it

Submitted by Combat Wombat on Mon, 2006-10-16 22:29.

Alright after some work it seems se5 has a limit in the systemnames.txt of 16369 lines lol. I have used the wonders of Microsoft Excel to strip away all the characters that may be causing problems.

You can download this file and choose the 16369 names you want lol. I dont have time to go through and decide which ones should die and which should live, so I leave it up to you.
http://www.secenter.org/SystemNames.zip

Edit: oh and I never figured out if there was a problem with the characters for sure but I felt in the interest of time and me not wanting to go through each name with a umlaut or accent mark to figure out what was fine and what wasn't I just got rid of them all.

Thanks for claiming credit

Submitted by Fyron on Mon, 2006-10-16 22:54.

Thanks for claiming credit on the testing. Eye-wink

It is not a character issue, it is a line number issue. A 108 line file with pretty much all the accent marks worked fine.

The file that is up now

Submitted by Combat Wombat on Tue, 2006-10-17 11:55.

The file that is up now without the characters should work just fine, all fifty thousand something lines of it, lots and lots of system names.

Doesn't someone have a

Submitted by MasterChiToes on Tue, 2006-10-17 14:50.

Doesn't someone have a random system name generator yet? Shouldn't be hard to come up with one that creates a new SystemNames.txt of whatever length.
