Considering buying, concerns about copy protection

Submitted by Teddy Bär on Fri, 2008-03-28 18:37. Space Empires V General

I stumbled across Space Empires via playing the Sins of a Solar Empire Demo.

I have had a look at the demo, which I feel does not do itself any favours, that said it looks to be an epic 4x in the classic tradition and add to this that it is still being supported by the developer I am willing to take the jump and put down money.

The only thing that will stop me is if the game comes with some nasty/restrictive/intrusive DRM.

So the question is, does it come with some nasty/restrictive/intrusive DRM?

No. It's just a CD key.

So long as you buy the CD version of SE5, the only "copy protection" is a CD key. You can even reformat your OS (or copy it to a different PC entirely) and run the old SE5 install just by typing it in again. Eye-wink

The Digital River download version naturally has some form of DRM to lock it down, and the Steam version is filled to the brim with Valve-style DRM.

I realize it may not be nice to say but you should avoid Steam, or anything similar, like the plague. I've read too much about it in this forum and elsewhere.

Thanks for the extra comments.

I would never go Steam as I see it as a 1984 'Big Brother'. I mean FFS, you have to be connected to the internet every time you want to play, just not on.

Nothing more needs to be said about the Digital River.

Stardock Games do have the right business model, it is a shame that I cannot support them as Sins of a Solar Empire is sadly in the end just a C&C game in space, there is nothing deep about it.

As for Galactic Civilizations II, ship combat where I fire, you alive? OK then you fire, am I alive? OK then I fire, are you.... I cannot buy into that as even with peaceful intentions there will be a reasonable amount of combat and this is why I stopped playing the Civilisation games way back in the 90's.

Hopefully I can find it somewhere local but that might not happen as apparently it is no longer published over here. Not sure I would be willing to wait 3-4 weeks to get it via Amazon.

Cheers,

Teddy Bär

Where is "over here" ?
If Germany, it should still be available.

However, I would suggest to directly order an US copy.
(Using an US version myself)

It is probably cheaper, even with shipping, and works better
with patches and mods.

I am not sure on the patch issues, but the US patch does
not immediately work on the boxed international version,
afterwards the US patch works with the english version afaik.
Please check for respective forum threads for more details.
Just so you are not surprised.

Other than that I would highly suggest to buy the game !
It is lots of fun if you are into this kind of 4x games.
Consider using a mod (myself using balance mod and FQM).

Have fun !

That is untrue. You can play any protected game in single player without going online; you just have to activate it when you install. Multiplayer games that go through Steam have to authenticate to be played online each time, but other games distributed via Steam don't have to do this (like SE5).

In Germany, it is at least still available at Saturn and Karstadt. Not sure about anything else. The german version (if installed in english) will work perfectly well with english patches, mods and PBW. But as fdlu said, shipping the american version might still be cheaper...
