What's YOUR favorite Mod?

Submitted by ftarzanin on Wed, 2008-03-26 22:54. Space Empires V General

OK, I'm new to the Space Empires but I've become addicted pretty quickly and I'm trying to get a feel for all the different mods here.

What's your favorite mod and why?

I've played the devnull 1.66.1 which I liked as it seemed to be alot more though out but I don't have the time to play two or three of these games at once ... so what's your suggestion?

‹ duplicated custom neutral races UI Lag, any possible ways to alleviate it? ›

Does it count if I vote for my own mod?

I've loved balance mod sofar. But I'm looking forward to Nova Mod which will introduce some stuff I like.

Ofcourse FQM is an essential component for any mod (or base game). The looks of the game simple improve thousandfold Sticking out tongue

A modified Inter-related Mod.

Mind you, the normal IRM is wonderfull, I'm just picky about specific things.

Dark Nova, Balance, IRM, FQM, UAI and some others all have good points.

It depends on what you like the most and want added.

Balance Mod (BM) is one of the most commonly used mods, and for good reason. It's worth trying out to get a feel for what a lot of people consider is the standard (stock has some horribly unbalanced things).

Me, the alternate weapons/armour system in IRM I liked when I played it some months ago. Haven't had much time to invest in SE V lately though.

Hard thing about Mods when playing alone is which ones have the AI programmed to use the new stuff.

The unnamed Mod, I believe, has the AI benefits of Balance Mod without the tech table limits. Smiling

Balance and Unnamed mods have the AI using whats included in the mod, so they get my vote. Once I get my mod doing what its suppose to do I'll vote for myself Smiling

At this point I'd have to say DevnullMod - I like the way Devnullicus integrated the racial techs into the regular tech tree so an organic race gets organic armor (and not regular armor) by researching the same armor tech everyone else does. There's also the gradual miniaturization of components (as well as the increases in HP for non-armor components which are more than in Balance Mod and less than in stock - just right! Smiling) And DevnullMod is one of the few mods with varying size facilities! 1000kT facilities are boring! Sticking out tongue

What I don't like about DevnullMod is the bundling of MMP files... oi. At least Balance Mod got to be grandfathered in by using an ancient version of FQM from before the MMP days. Eye-wink

Umm, not sure what you're talking about, Fyron. I've never bundled the MMP files. In fact, NOT bundling them (on your advice, in fact), has been one of the biggest headaches of the mod since it causes many people to get confused and give up because they don't realize they need to download more content in order to play the mod. This single "feature" of the MMP has caused me to spend far more time helping people get the mod set up than anything else...as I predicted it would when you originally told me to not bundle it.

I've considered many times changing the fact that I DON'T bundle the MMP files, but have so far not given in to temptation.

You've got all the components from Pack 1 in there.

Ah, now I understand what you're talking about. Unfortunately, with the components, I am forced to include the ones I use from MMP because I have a bunch of my own as well and in order to make the game run (and create the combined components.bmp file), I have to have them all. It was either that or not use them at all... which I'm starting to feel might be a better option.

Nonetheless, I do have to apologize for sidetracking this thread. Ignore my messages and continue talking about favorite mods. Personally, I have to admit some bias for liking DevnullMod, but that's simply because I've put a lot of effort into it. Ignoring that mod, I'd have to say my favorite mod is IRM or possibly EvilMod.

Missing portraits should get pulled from the stock folder though, as with the stock portrait files; just the mini file is necessary.

I think if you were to more prominently feature the MMP link next to the mod download link, people would have less trouble. I don't even see any text relating to MMP on the page at all. For example, if you look on the FQM download page, there is a link and explanation for MMP right before the actual mod download link. I've only gotten a single email relating to mod trouble from not having MMP installed as a result.

This thread is very interesting to me as I am just about to start a new game using a mod for the first time and would love to know what people think of the various mods. So far, BM is winning in my mind because it seems like its focus was fixing data bugs in the original. Whereas, the other mods might just complicate matters?! I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I would like to know if you can combine mods (i.e. What is your favorite mod combo?)

Theres very little of that really. Fyron's Quadrant Mod (FQM) can go into alot of other mods and pieces of Balance Mod (BM) have been used as an underlying bedrock for various mods but mostly they just aren't compatible with each other. I believe there was one person attempting to mesh BM, FQM and Asteroid Habitats together but I don't know if he was successful.

I would enjoy Gritty Galaxy were it not for the infernal dynamic crew requirements! Sad That makes designing a ship no fun at all as you have to keep guessing and clicking!

Keep in mind the hit counter is new for each mod version.
