Has any one ever seen a "Points - Change" event work?

Submitted by Narn on Wed, 2008-03-19 12:51. Space Empires IV General

I have been modding SE4 for a while now and playing it too. My mod is going to be an extensive overhaul of the graphics and the game combined with some modified ideas from existing mods. I am about half way done now. This mod will change just about everything and make ALL of the graphics better.

It is my intention to add over 100 new events with new pictures in addition to the events that have been added by various other mods. While editing the Events file I have not seen any of my new "Points - Change" events occur and it made me realize that I don't think that I have ever seen one happen.

So im just asking has any one ever seen one occur, or does it not work? If you don't know what im talking about its the event where your empire gains or loses a certain amount of resources from that event. I just want to know if they occur in game. Any responses would be helpful – thanks.

Ok thats good to hear. Do you know what triggers them? I just would like to see one for myself. And how come they happen so infrequently?

Do you plan to submit artwork to the Image Mod for the benefit of all?

Note that no events can occur during the first 20 turns. The chance of an event occurring each turn is based on the settings in Settings.txt. If an event is randomly determined to occur during a turn, the specific event is chosen randomly from a list of all events with a severity less than or equal to that chosen during game setup. Since there are a lot of events, it can be a great while before any particular event will occur. Make sure your events are ordered in the file from Low to Severe severity rankings, else you might run into problems with events of too high a severity occurring.

If you want to test a specific event, make a copy of Events.txt that has just that event, and set the event chance values in Settings.txt to 1000 (they are in tenths). Start a game and process 20 turns, and you will see that one event occur on turn 2402.0 (or maybe 2402.1, I forget).

Thank you for replying with a decent response. However I had already known all of that. I had already edited the settings file and tested it the events file with only one event loaded. But after your message I deiced to try it again. It still does not work. I tested each time with a new game and so far no luck. Some games I tried for 20- 80 turns the event still did not happen.

Look guys I know my stuff. Its not working. I have come to the conclusion that there are 2 possible reasons it is not working. 1) It does not work and no one ever noticed before. Or 2) the event requires a special circumstance is not being met and thus the event does not occur.

Out of these 2 possibility's it may be possible that the event needs another triggering requirement that is not available for the event to occur. For example in order for the ship damaged event to occur you need a ship. In order for a research damaged event to occur you need to be researching (By the way I not tested to see if research events occur yet). Here are some examples of my statements, and I know this is only mock code by the way.

IF (ship damaged) Event triggered AND (player has ship) THEN Event

IF (research damaged) Event triggered AND (player Researching) THEN Event

So this is what I want to know what is the mystery trigger for:

IF (Points - Change) Event triggered AND (----mystery trigger----) THEN Event

Also I want to know why they aren't working and if any one can get them to work and how. SO lets have a little experiment shall we. Who can make this stock SE4 event work:

Type := Points - Change
Severity := Medium
Effect Amount := -3000
Message To := Owner
Num Messages := 1
Message Title 1 := Space Rust
Message 1 := Space Rust has infected much of our resource stores. We have lost [%ActualAmount] resources.
Picture := FacilityDestroyed
Time Till Completion := 0
Num Start Messages := 0

You must explain exactly what you did to make it work and if possible include a picture. The only prize is my gratitude. Oh and don't just reply asking if i had tried to build resource silos because I did.

So no one up for my challenge then? No one wants to prove me wrong? Am I correct in stating that it does not work? I want a response from some one here! Any kind would be nice. It would sent me into great elation to know that am wrong.

I'm going to sweeten the deal. If some one can prove me wrong I will give the community a few new images from my mod as well as some screen shots of all the stuff I have done to the game so far. Its a lot and its going to be really cool. If I knew that it worked I would work harder to get my mod done.
If no one can prove me wrong, and I found out that something that the rest of the SE4 community didn't know forever then I am going to proclaim myself as grand emperor god of all SE4 and demand that everyone call me as such. In fact I will call my self the Omnipotent Grandmaster Emperor God Modder of all Space Empires of now and forever. When ever I am on any message board I will proclaim myself such and all must cow before me and be subservient to my wishes. If any one complains I will point to this thread and say see they were unable to disprove my greatness and thus it is true. The only way that you can deny me this title, and your horrible future in the SE boards, is if you can prove me wrong.

Don't have the time or desire to figure that out but I do know that events occur in SEV. Those little subroutines served as the basis for the code I added that dropped population after setting the Max Pop to triple the value and then letting it be incremented up as tech was researched. The one event that sticks most in mind is that of ships loosing supplies. I can say for certain though that I have never played a game where all events have occurred...even in the longest of games.

You can edit the code to force an event change by cutting and pasting the correct subroutines/function calls into the Main just before it launches into its normal flow. This will skip the date issue and I am positive you know exactly how to do that...

I would be curious to see if the title claim is objected to since I suspect most of us pay little attention to all the trapping drapped across a moniker...

OK, here's a response: have you noticed how little traffic the SEIV forums get? A significant fraction of the SEIV community never even visits this site.

Yeah I have noticed. Where do you propose I go that has a higher concentration of SE4 users? I just want to get my question answered.

What are the conditions of your test? What severity do you have selected in game setup?

Are you just running a bunch of turns where your only planet is your homeworld? If that is the case, the event will never happen. HWs are immune from such events.
