game-braking bug

Submitted by WolfC on Sat, 2008-03-15 05:28. Space Empires V General

Hi everyone,
I´ve an really annoying ,even gamebraking bug. Every time when an ship leaves the planet-hex it appears really big, sometimes it is as big as the whole sector, when it passes through an wormhole the "white swallowing light effect" of it has to grow as big as the ship...which takes an looong time. However, if I go to the setup and start the game with low graphic details it only happens sometimes, but the same problem is in the tactical view and there its every time whatever I do...the ships take the whole tactical map even when I dont do the combat manually...which makes combat impossible as it seems that they cant shoot.
I´ve an geforce 7900, newest drivers and newest directx, dual-core athlon (tried also to let only one core handle se5) installed the game several times with different patch versions and it appears only on patched versions as I´ve installed an fresh 1.0 ver and everything is fine and playable, with 1.58 and 1.66 the bug exists, didnt test older versions yet. i´ve also tried devnulls mod with multimedia pack, bug exists there too.
I´m really riddled why this bug happens and how to solve it and if any one got the same problems? maybe even got an workaround Smiling

Best regards
Wolf

Make a saved game and sent it to MM...best way to get it fixed.

Done that already (several times in fact).

BTW, it appear that only nvidia cards have that problem .....
Only people with then are reporting.....

Actually, I did have this problem too on my ATI Radeon 9800xt with WinXpSP2. However, it only appeared if I had alt-tabbed out of the game, if I remember correctly.

I dont think Nvidia cards are the culprit, I have a Nvidia GeForece 8600 GT and no issues

Alt-tabbing does strange things to the re-drawing when you go back in. I thought this was a DirectX issue. Smiling

I have a Radeon X700 ( notebook ) and it happens too.
At another thread Kwok wrote that malfador could not reproduce the error. The problem with sending in savegames is, that the error goes away if you reload ( you all know this as the workaround, too )

I think is a combination of memory and graphik issues concerning DirectX and switching ( as I remember you have to write special routines for a game to be able to tab out of it, and not killing it )
older versions may not have the error because the tabbed turn processing was implemented later on.

I tab around wildly in my game ( reading forums, doing other stuff .. ) and play for long times, even for days with the same session.

I think the bug happens when the games clutters itself to much over the time ( maybe there are some unresolved memory issues in the tabbing routine )
but MM did some good work on this allready ( at least it feels like this ) so maybe this is the final touch for 1.68 Smiling

I think the only way MM can fix this is dropping DX8 and recompiling SEV with native DX9, but don't think is a easy sell.......
