Go for it. They are usually not worth the effort to build and stock since the game should have been long over at that point. If you find one early by all means go for it. Be prepared to defend it to the death. Smiling

I don't mean that. My colony ships can't colonise it. In the game does it just act like a planet?

I've heard of people having problems with this before. As in there is only a certain place you can colonize it, you can't just click on the edge or whatever. My advice would be to try to click on various places of it to get it to colonize it. Sorry I can't be more specific but perhaps someone else has had this problem and can give some pointers.

As long as I know it's worth the effort I'll give it a go, thanks.

Noo .. its not Smiling

Its much to big .. you don't have the time to build so much facilities you could put on a dyson sphere ..
and all those people who could live there .. those pop. bonuses are ridiculous .. you don't want that

for your problem .. try sending a colony ship with the planets menu,
maybe it finds the right spot by itself Smiling

I thought where the center would be (the star's location) would be the target. As you can tell from my last post, it has been awhile for me. Smiling

How did you find a lone uncolonized dyson sphere anyway ?

It was in a system as simple as that- no planets of course (lots of asteroids to mine though)

Just colonise it at (0,0) the logical course of action!!

Woohoo Smiling
Somebody did it and convinced the map creater to put spheres in Smiling

But I have another question concerning Spheres or Rings.

Am I the only one who thinks its strange that you can mine minerals and radioactives on something you actually built yourself ?

First I build it, then I drill holes in it to collect the ressources again ?!?

Its a processing center, rather than a mining center... And/or you stole the tech from crystalline races to make stuff out of solar energy. Eye-wink

Hehehe, yeah, that would be great in a dyson sphere.

Hold on here just one moment! Are you playing a custom map or some specific mod? Did you find this extremely late in the game maybe, after an AI player has died from a plague on the sphere world? I thought the AI didn't use Stellar Manipulation yet - let alone build a sphere world?!? Imagine finding that in a PBW game ... if you can hold on to it, then you're set to grind your opponents into a pulp given the time.

It's a game without the balance mod or any other mod. It had ancient tech on it. There's 64000 cargo space & 40000 facility space. The minerals are 12% so i would say that answers the question about resource gathering. There are asteroids all around it so it's not a great loss for mining. Found early in the game! I have found it in a PBW game, hopefully you can't guess which one Smiling

What can I use all that cargo space for? What are the advantages (other than street cred)?

Its a f***ing huge planet, if breathable six times the size of a huge planet ( or more ? )
lots of buildings and people go on it ( which gives a loooooot of pop-modifiers .. but i don't know at which pop amount its capped .. if it is )

so if you want to chuck out dreadnoughts in one turn .. this is your ticket Smiling

it's hell to defend though, through the different sections of the sphere, so bases and sats don't do you any good because they may be in the right sector when needed maybe not.

so load her up with fighters, drones and wps, slam a few planetary shields on it and maybe sats are allright when launched in battle Smiling
watch the enemy get zerged.

mine the whole circumfence of the sphere Smiling

Look for Juju's reply below. I think Weapon Platforms would indeed be a safer way to defend given the possible placement issues with satellites or bases.

A sphereworld should be much much bigger than a huge world. Without going into the math, just compare surface areas! Smiling

Should have bigger facility space & when I found it 3 different alien techs were said to be lying around- I got one Sad

and WPs shouldn't count against cargo space since I would imagine them being placed on the outside of the sphere. Smiling

But there would be less room outside Smiling
There is no atmosphere so it should be domed ^^

But what if the sphere, or the ring for that matter takes damage ?

Its a artificial construct, you should be able to damage it, leaks in the hull, less facility space .. or something.
Actually this should apply to planets too .. if you pound away at them for a while the planet value and conditions should go for the worse ( nuclear winter anyone ? ).
You could give all weapons tiny fractures of condition damaging damage, at least all planet damaging weapons for that. So there is more use for the condition facilities and more in it, if you capture a planet and not just glass it.

So, ah now .. how do I blow up a sphere or ring ? Do I need the tectonic bomb or the stellar thresher torpedo ? Smiling

Re: colonise dyson sphere

Would you need domes for WPs?

Asteroids would work nicely to destroy rings. All you would need to do is damage a section bad enough to induce a wobble in its orbit then it would eventually start falling into the star.

For spheres, a cool way to trash them would be to slow the orbit of an outer planet (if any) causing its orbit to decay and slowly spiral down to the sphere.

Smiling

I'm sure that a tectonic bomb wouldn't work - the bomb isn't big enough.

You could probably use the stellar bomb, if you are able to reach the star, or you may have to resort to using nebula/black hole generators.

Not sure about nebulas but I think you still need a star for black holing a sector. Smiling

I had one destroyed in a game before. Was in a galaxy with catastropic random events and the star went nova. Bet that would look like an egg filled with dynamite.

Hey benc, look around for The Ring of Charon by Roger MacBride Allen, it's the first book of The Hunted Earth series and a Dyson Sphere plays a major part in it.

The world is how I imagine it.

I think system ring is impossible, but have doubts about dyson sphere. But thanks though
