Ya. PBW does all the processing. You just make your moves and send them in to the server.
If these settings are undesired, please feel free to ask for changes. I really want an epic PBW game with more than 2 people Sticking out tongue

I guess I earned a big "duhh" for my question. The server could take all day crunching the numbers and it would make no difference to anyone. I can see we'd have the opportunity to play games that would choke a good PC in short order. Smiling

The e-mail client is down on on pbw. There are no e-mails being sent out for anything. Usually you get e-mails saying turns are ready, or for join requests. nothing. assume these means no passwords either.

Last time I heard the PBW server had a 20 min limit on turns...which meant that any turn that took longer than that would fail and had to be processed by the host...this limit may have been extended or changed, as I encountered this problem several months ago.

With 10 players plus neutrals, 5000 ships, and 10000 units it may not take long to reach 20 minutes. I play my games with a few hundred ships and units per player and it is a while before things bog down. Smiling

Don't forget that this server may be processing multiple turns from multiple games at the same time, unless it uses some kind of queueing. I have no clue what the specs of the server are, but kudos to whomever is providing it and keeping it alive. It's not just the hardware but also mailing megabytes per e-mail around, multiplied by number of games and players per game.

I would advise you to play just as you have set it up, but to keep in mind that you may have to process some turns yourself and upload the files(I can help you do this if you don't know how)...but that should not be until mid/late game...you may even be lucky and not encounter this problem. I simply wanted you to be aware of the 20 min processing limit.

Well, I would be interested, but really would prefer if you were to put 5000 racial points instead of 3000. Not a big deal, but would be nice. Never played through a central PBW, so it would be interesting to try it.

I've never done it before either. The settings really aren't that much of an issue with me since I see this as a learning experience so it shouldn't hurt for either of us to give it a shot. If you'd like to discuss settings contact Cerberus as he is the GM. Smiling

Re: ASTOCKGAME

I suppose he will read my post soon anyway. I usually play stock with the upgraded AI mod. Would recomend it here too, if there weren't only neutral AI empires in the game, so it doesn't matter much. At the begining the upgraded AI can make minced meat out of you with their intelligence attacks. You wouldn't expect it to have a rise from 2 k to 40 k in one turn. But with the upgraded AI it happens. Besides the upgraded AI actually attacks planets, deploys fighters, satellites, mines and drones. It's actually a challenge however small it may be, when compared to stock AI wich is non existant. I don't know, how will I know if this game actually takes off or not? I mean will I be contacted by e-mail or should I be checking this thread regulary?

After your application has been accepted you can generate your empire file and upload it. Be careful with your settings, its easy to mess up.

I like to see my ships actually fly or go somewhere. Besides on the strategic level it's a big problem. Everything must happen at least with 1 turn of delay. And if you want to take just some fighters from that planet, and leave some, you got a problem there.

Re: ASTOCKGAME

And as I said we tried playing a TCP/IP simultaneous game, but stopped because of this. So it would be great if Cerberus could clear this out. We are already at turn 90 with PBM and happy about it : ). I could just give it a try to simultaneous anyway, but wouldn't like to dissapoint the team by dropping out if I really hate it.

Ok, I have been approved, but how the hell do I upload my empire file? And if my shipset is not included in stock, how do I add it to the game? Third question, cerberus, you haven't answered my question if this is going to be a simultaneous style game or not.

Re: ASTOCKGAME

Submitted by Vince278 on Tue, 2008-03-25 10:27.

From what I understand, all PBW is simultaneous movement.

I'm trying a simul game on my PC and I find it to be a pain so far. For example, in a regular game I can load pop on a transport and move in the same turn. In a simul game I have to load one turn then move the next. Units also cannot be launched from a planet in the same turn. A question I now have is how would I attack a particular fleet in a crowded sector taking into consideration that all of the other fleets are moving as I am moving?

Re: ASTOCKGAME

When you attack in simultaneous, you are given the option of "attack seek" which means your ships will track their target.

In most cases you can stack your orders in simultaneous. For example, you can tell a ship to pick up population at Planet X and then move to Planet Y and drop off the population etc.

It takes some experience to learn the ropes, but it's not as bad as it seems at first.

Re: ASTOCKGAME

If it's simultaneous, well... I suppose I will have to withraw. I could try it, but I didn't like it the last time, so I suppose it will be the same now. And quitting after the game begins wouldn't be nice. I suppose you could get used to it, but besides the strategic and tactical disadvantages it takes away from the "feel". It morphes the game from a computer strategy game, to a kind of a board game. You cannot explore properly, react in time and so on, the orders take longer to take place. For example if in a normal PBM game you could have your first colony by turn 2 (design and build the colony ship) then colonize a nearby planet next turn, in simultaneous it's possible only by turn 3 in the best case scenario.

Hi all. Back from travelling.
1 slot still open. The game is simultaneous. With you being the only one with a problem with it i don't see the need to change it. As for mods. NO MODS! Pure stock. The neutrals are there to be conquered. I'm not interested in having the computer be a challenging player. As for racial points. 5000pts is alot. To many for me. You just pick everything good its not good for variety in races. Sticking out tongue

As an advice: You should probably set the AI's the battle versus the humans and disallow them to make treaties.
AI's are easy to exploit and drain for their tech. Best let them fight for their worth and keep the diplomacy between players.
