Can't attack enemy ships, my ships pass right over and ignore them

Submitted by dividebyxero on Fri, 2008-02-29 10:32. Space Empires V General

Playing a turn based, hotseat multiplayer game and I am finding that when ships of one of the player empires moves into a hex containing ships of the other empire (whom they are at war with), nothing happens. I see the ships at first, but after moving onto that hex, then highlighting another hex, then highlighting the hex the ships are on again, all the enemy ships disappear from the sector object display. This happens for both players.

Then it gets weirder. Sometimes it works fine, they attack normally, other times it does the same thing. In one instance I was unable to get them to attack, I closed SEV, reopened and loaded my save, and the attack worked fine. In another instance I had just completed one attack ok, went to make another and it suddenly stopped working.

After experimenting with it a bit I have found that it is not working more often than it is, reloading the save rarely seems to get it working, and I can find no pattern to explain why it does work sometimes.

Does anyone know if this is a known issue? Been playing SEV since the 1.1* patches and I've never seen this until now.

Currently running ver 1.66 with balance mod 1.14 on a map created by the genesis map maker.

I've seen that once too, during 1 game only. This is not on a warp point either and was early game. The game that it happen to was a single player game so I just started up another.

Does the sector have a sight obscuration ability?

Not sure about that one Capt. Was one of my earlier test games played. Could very well be. But the funny thing was the enemy ships were "ghosting". IE, at the beginning of the move, it was at a hex. I move my ship there, but no combat happened. After clicking on and off the hex a few times it "disappeared", and seem to appear somewhere else. I doubt its a obscuration effect unless it was written to do that... seemed like a bug to me.

hmmm I know it doesn't answer all of whats happening, but are you cloaked?

When your cloaked you move the sector but do not attack, and when you exit the game and come back your cloak turns off and then you would be able to attack them.

cloak has done some strange things...Im not sure if it turned off randomly but sometimes you can be attacked when at a wp when cloaked (like I said it might have turned off, might not) and idk I think it needs some bugs ironed out of it.

This could be a small part of the problem, not all of it...that just sounds odd

In sequential mode, the random sight obscuration ability in some storm/asteroid/WP sectors can change with each update of the system display - such as when a ship moves etc.

In simultaneous mode, the random value is set for the turn.

Nope. There are a number of sectors in the 2 systems in question that do (I even have 1 entire system that does), but this issue has appeared across many sectors in several incidents.

This sounds like that same thing that is happening to me. I move my ship onto an enemy occupied sector, I can see the enemy ship/base/colony, and when I arrive there I then see my ship on the sector display along with the enemy ship. When I click on another sector and then click back, they are gone, only my ship is displayed. I can then move off the sector and the enemy is still there.

Nope, cloaking tech hasn't even been developed, not a factor.

Found out something interesting after a little experimentation.

I tried altering the "Base Sight Level Ship" value in the balance mod settings.txt file, set them to a really high value. Tried initiating combat, worked fine. After adjusting the value some more and a few more tests I found that if the value is any less than 7 it will not work.

Now, by curious coincidence "7" is exactly the value I set for a system wide sight obscuration property in 1 star system. It is important to note that none of the battles have taken place in this system, and enemy ships cannot see each other at all in that system, which, as far as I know, is how sight obscuration is supposed to work. In neighboring systems (where battles HAVE taken place) the glitch appears as I described above, ships visible, move in to attack, then ships are not visible.

I still have the map txt file from the genesis mapmaker and I reviewed it again, the property looks to be set correctly, just for that 1 system. Additionally, in game, when viewing the system properties it shows up correctly in that system, and the properties in other systems do not list sight obscuration (which is how it should be).

The change to the settings.txt file is far from optimal, but it is the only thing that will allow this game to progress forward. Anyone else have any ideas as to the cause of this?

I've seen the same glitch many times (about twenty) in my one game of 1.66 + Balance 1.14. My working hypothesis is that it's a stochastic bug in SEV's data management, the probability of which rises gradually over time. Quit-restart-restore has always 'fixed' it, and allowed combat to proceed.

In the same game, I have seen a truly spectacular related bug -- but only once. Picture this: Wanduk is an asteroid belt system, i.e. 0 stars, 2 small None planets, 14 asteroid fields. 1 planet is "enemy but empty" (0 population), which means I cannot fight it to invade it (there is never any combat), nor transfer pop to it. I conquer the other one. For 10 turns, everything proceeds normally.

Suddenly, for one turn only, I see that planet as: enemy, fully populated (200M), 3 bases + 2 ships, and it just produced a colony ship, which is now flying through Wanduk. I think: Hot dang! Now I can invade! I click an adjacent system to select my nearest cargo destroyer, and when I click back on Wanduk ...

... it's empty again (0 pop), no bases, no ships. But -- that colony ship it just built is still flying away normally! (So I'm not imagining things -- it was real enough to have built a ship.) Eventually, I overtake and board that ship.

So: It's not just ships that won't fight you -- I am somehow fighting against a Ghost Colony that phases in and out from Dimension X???

The AIs do not have cloaking technology. (Surely you jest. It's only turn 80, and I exist in the galaxy, i.e. I own 2/3 of it by now -- the AIs are just getting to Armor 4.)
