Sins of a Solar Empire? |
Anyone tried this? It's supposed to be 4x and got some solid reviews...
Thanks,

Re: Sins of a Solar Empire?
I really love Sins a lot, it is simple sure but it is very fun and has a lot to offer. It isn't like Space empires of course but I think it is a step in the right direction and it does have some depth to it. Of course I think if we could get a game like sins with all the options and features of Space empires, that would be the ultimate game.
Re: Sins of a Solar Empire?
A step in the right direction? From where, and to where?
How do you propose we manage a complex ship design system as seen in MOO2/Stars/SE in real time, especially in a multiplayer environment? The same would apply to more complex planet economic models, and certainly to more space opera scale maps (dozens to hundreds of systems, rather than 1 to 5 or whatever the upper limit is). Real time main phase mechanics would seem to demand simplification to me, to make the game manageable and playable.
Granted, having a combat system more like Sins in SE visually would be nice, but not so much for the main play phase.
Re: Sins of a Solar Empire?
so sins is like a half of sev?...ish...interesting
I never got into the space games cause I always wanted more out of them. Sev is really what I have always wanted...granted I do like graphics =p
I really like strat games loved chess even when I was lil kid and I was wondering if there are any other space or not space games that are very stragiety oriented
thats one of the things I think sev is lacking, for you to have a stragiety game you have to see the game board to plan your moves to counter your opponets move instead of bigger guns and lets hope they dont have fighters...in sev the only way to do that really is a cloaked ship/sat in the enemy space and thats hard work to get it there, and then throw on top of it they cloak sometimes just turns off (someone eles noted on the problem too...its not that I ran out of supplies or was detected)
Re: Sins of a Solar Empire?
SoaSE is a strange beast; too complex to be a RTS game, but too simplistic to be a 4x game (in the classic sense). Time will tell if it can carve out a successful new niche for itself (games like Homeworld and Haegemonia were similar, but more on the RTS end of the spectrum than SoaSE).
Comparing SEV to chess is a mistake; chess is merely a game of maneuvering pieces on a board. It is certainly very complex, but it is very abstract and pure "eXtermination." 4X games like SE5 are about exploration, expansion, economy building, developing an entire new empire/civilization/etc., and only in the end does warfare come into play. Such games are infinitely more realistic and complex than chess, simply because in a real contest of strategic warfare, you cannot simply see every unit in the battle, and know exactly what sort of capabilities (moves) they can make.
For reference, you can actually have omnipresent view in a game of SE4/5. In the setup screen, there are options to have the entire map revealed to all players, as well as an omnipresent view option where all players see every object in the game, all the time.

Pyroman - Its not space based but if you like strategy games give Hearts of Iron II a go. Its the best WWII strategy game out there.

Re: Sins of a Solar Empire?
The "Lords of the Realm" series (& Lords of Magic) was preety good as well abit dated now but interesting gameplay none the less. Set in the middle ages (or fantasy in the case of LoM). Heck I'll still throw in LoM:SE on occasion just to play the scenarios.

Re: Sins of a Solar Empire?
If you played Hegemonia , you know what Sins is about. Pretty much same RTS but with new fx ,only difference i could find is that every planet located on a same playing field not that every solar system is its own map like in Hegemonia plus some new gameplay concepts. Good game and fun to play ,but 4X is nowhere to be found. Wish SE had prety picture like that though
Re: Sins of a Solar Empire?
I will have to check out the games you guys listed off, thanks =D
Oh and seriously you must never have played chess...its not "abstract" at all, if you start playing oh I think I will move this piece randomly over here I feel like my queen should be here...you will loose in about 5 turns. Chess is cold, calculating and cruel. Thats how you got to play sev hit the supply planets, hit the research planets hit the storage planet. the supply and storage are most likely on a small planet so they cant have that many weapon platforms and if you hit them with something fast they wont have time to react ships to cover the planet
sure sev has economy chess doesnt but when you let your economy building surpass military and dont use your wonderfull economy you just turned this wonderfull war game into a sims game
Re: Sins of a Solar Empire?
I would love a Sims Game with the ability to wage war
Anybody up to a game of SimCity 40k ?

You've never played against a real person then... Even you you hit my supply and storage planet they have shields/weapon platforms/fighters AND starbases in orbit. Have a blast. I protect all my planets equally. They will also have troops to protect against those pesky invaders.

Re: Sins of a Solar Empire?
Its not really a 4x space opera in the sense of MOO/SE/Stars, just as GalCiv wasn't really a 4x in that sense. SoaSE is an even more simplistic take on the genre than GalCiv was.
