Meson Blasters of DOOM?

Submitted by Rellep on Fri, 2006-09-22 18:18. Space Empires V General

Maybe this should go to modding, I dunno...

(Reposting this from shrapnel forums)
While playing around with my "kewl rangez demod" (all weapon ranges about 1000 with alltech) I noticed that, for some reason, projectile weapons simply annihilated anything with beam weapons. It was obvious why missiles would do that (after all, with no way to mod it, direct fire weapons have a "to hit"-modifier of something like -1000) but why, say, meson blasters?

After some testing, I discovered that projectiles are fired directly at the target, with no adjustment whatsoever for hit penalties (or bonuses, for that matter). In other words, they always hit... Unless the target is moving even a bit laterally (in relation to the shooter) in which case they miss all the time, unless the range is so short the target has no time to move away from the bullets path... This also means that manual dodging is possible.
(Repost end)

Additional testing results: You can not dodge shots who "really" hit, they home on target (which looks kinda strange). However, missed shots do hit pretty much 100% of the time if the target vessel is approaching head on, in other words, pretty damn often...

Also, there appears to be a hard-coded maximum range (around 300 or so, I think). Kinda shame.

NOTICE MEE WAAH WAAH

After some testing with different-sized targets I noticed that apparently projectiles try to miss, but they hit the outer edges of ships... I'd guess the aim needs to be adjusted a bit.

Lateral move

I have noticed lots of misses also when I move lateral to the enemy especially at the edge of the range circle.

Exactly. When moving

Exactly. When moving laterally, you move away from the path of the projectiles, thus miss = miss (if they were meant to actually hit, they would home on you). The problem is that projectile weapons hit way more than they should, because combat generally begins with a head-on approach...
