Devnullmod

Submitted by curtnoel on Fri, 2008-02-08 00:45. Space Empires V General

I got the new Devnull mod to try and unzipped it in the Gametypes folder and when I started it I got a could not file c:\program box. Only way to get rid of it was to ctrlaltdel out.

So I went back and noticed that I had to download some effects packs which I did but they did not extract to the proper places like it said it should, in fact they didnt seem to be zipped files at all. So I manually put them in the folders specified even though they didnt look a thing like the pictures already in those folders. Same thing happened. What am I doing wrong. I tried the 1 66 0 version and the 1 66 1 version still wrong results.

Not sure but you might need FQM loaded as well. That would be Fyron's Quadrant Mod. I know you'll need the Imagemod/Multimedia Pack.

If Devnull need FQM why doesnt he state that on his site? And the only FQM I saw was for SE 4.

"2. download and install the Components, Stellar and Effects multimedia packs from http://mm.spaceempires.net/ into your root SE5\Pictures folder."

Guess where I found this? Right - this has been stated in the readme file of the DevNull Mod (both 1660 and 1661).
Why do people include readme files? You answer this question yourself!

Yes I did that and still got the same result. I DID read the readme file you oh-so-smug-smarter than thou idiot. Its people like you that make games like this unpopular to the average person. Why not ask other questions that might pinpoint what I may be doing wrong? Instead you feel OBLIGED to make fun, as if I was complaining about anything in the first place (which I wasnt). Have a nice life you lame forum posting geek. Adios.

Beg your pardon, sir.

My comment was mainly prompted by your statement "If Devnull need FQM why doesnt he state that on his site?" You didn't say that you didn't see it, you said it's not there. Sets a certain tone of blame, you know.
First of all, he does state it (click on the "readme" link two lines above the "download" link of 1.66.0 on his site. In general, don't expect modders' web sites to be as polished as the commercial ones - well, even the latter lack comprehensiveness and clarity in many cases, and Devnullicus' site is very informative indeed.
And you yourself didn't include a lot of information about the symptoms of your problem, what you did, and what happened. Reminded me of the guy who is sitting in a glasshouse ...
Just to explain the background of my polemic comment.

And if you read the readme file and followed the instructions (even without success) then what's the point of blaming Devnullicus for something that's irrelevant for the solution of your problem - even if you were right?

Back to the problem itself. It's really difficult to get a clear picture of the issue. Your talking about "effect packs", which are not ZIP files at all. The FQM and multimedia pack files I've downloaded are RAR files. There are many utilities available for expanding RAR files, for example WINRAR. If you open the RAR files using WINRAR, you'll see a folder structure underneath which, together with the readme information provided, should make it easy for you to expand the contents to the right places within your SE5 folder.
If this isn't clear enough or doesn't work or misses your point, please be more precise on your problem. Tell us which files you downloaded, what you did and what happened, give us as much information as possible. Try to put yourself in the people's shoes, who are reading your message but don't see your PC and your actions.
